Formatting in winxp install mess......

Hey thanks for checking out my post, i dont know if im being to paranoid and just not being patient enough but im installing winXP pro on one of my older machines that i just put more ram in and beleive it can handle it now.

the computer is a P3 700mz with 128 meg of ram

The computer originally had windoz 98 installed on it and im formatting the hard drive and it was stuck at 62 and 75 percent for like 2-4 minutes and it was worrying me. My question is could this be a sign of a bad HD controller? Its a VERY small drive so it shouldnt take long at all to format.

Thanks for your help-

the drive probably has a bad sector, and it's stuck formatting it. I'd replace the drive, i'd also suggest adding even more ram with winXP, 128mb won't be that smooth

winxp requires to 256mb to run smooth. that said, i have an older laptop with 192mb and it does fine for everyday tasks.

yeah i was thinkin bad sectors too, but its chuggin right through them its just takin forever ,, good thing there towards the end of the disk (79 , 81 percent)

will this still be ok ? and btw this is just for internet exploring aka dummy machine... nothin else

thanks for quick responses : )

Make sure your motherboard will support Windows XP... I tried like hell to install XP onto my old P3-733 and I couldn't get it to install. My mobo wasn't on the manufacturer's list of mobos that could support XP, so I'm guessing that's why. Just another option if it's not a HD problem.

yeah i have a computer that basically is the same and it runs XP fine, im pretty sure its the hard drive.

Because now while its trying to install its choking on many dll files.

: (

crappy

thanks for the help

WinXP Pro will run fine on a PII 300 with 128 MB of ram, i have no idea what you guys are worried about with a beefy machine like a 700 with 128, thats WELL over what it needs. good luck on the drive =)

Have you actually tried this?? XP on a P2 300???
I actually have an old P2 300, with 128 MB Sdram lying around. I have Installed WinME on it, and it appears that that is all this oldie can take!!

Yeh, probably a drive going bad.. see if you can find a good replacement in the for sale or hot deals forum, can most likely pick one up for not too much.

The 128mb will suffice just fine. Just go in and disable all non-essential services that are not needed. If you've looked before, then I'm sure you're aware of all the fluff windows xp runs on default that really isn't needed at all. I usually have my pf usage around 52-56mb ram on startup on a PIII 800mhz with 128mb ram at the house.

Visit this website if you aren't familiar with it.

Firstly, WinME sucks. If you knew anything about it, you wouldn't go anywhere near it.

Secondly, XP will run fine with the above specs. My laptop has similar numbers, and XP is no problem on it. You won't find me gaming or photoshopping on it, but for word processing and internet, its perfectly adaquate.

I know ME sucks, I upgraded to it from the Win98, and am really regretting it. It is bloated, slow and well... quite a pain!

Do you think it ll be wise for me to do an upgrade install of XP on my system?
