formatting .avi to mpeg

Hey guys i'm trying to burn some .avi's on to dvd. Normally i encode with TMPGEN3 XP and i burn with nero dvd author. But now for some god awful reason i get errors. THis is after i've burn like 10+ dvd and encoded more then 30 files. Now i need a quick fix program just so i can finish up the encoding. It encodes some episodes but not all. I need to get a .avi program freeware would be great that encodes to mpeg2 dvd format. With minimal lost of quailty. thanks guys
