Formatting a Cd-r/Cd-RW

I've got a Samsung 8/4/32 burner. Do I need to format the disk before I use it? Some of my friends say I don't need to but each time I insert a new disk(regardless of Cd-r/Cd-RW), the software (Adaptec easyCD) will prompt me to format it and whenever I format it, I'll have bout 100Mb less than what is specified on the disc cover. I've got this Imation 650Mb CD-RW, but once I format it, it'll read as 565 Mb?? Is there something I'm missing here?

no you dont need to format a plain old CDR. as for RW's, i really dont have a use for them seeing that i get my CDR's in bulk and dont give a rats ass if I waste one.

No, you do not need to format CD media of any kind. EasyCD is trying to get you to format the CD to use "DirectCD," which allows the CD to function as a floppy disk or other removable media (so you can add/erase single files). The problem with DirectCD is that it only works on computers that also have DirectCD installed (and of course it doesn't hold as much data). Just use CD Copier or the Easy CD Creator to make CDs without the use of DirectCD. In fact, I would uninstall DirectCD it if I were you (I did).

I don't use Adaptec's software any more; instead I use Nero. It is fast, less bloated, and it allows you to drag and drop MP3 files onto it for automatic conversion and burning 😉

Would I still be able to drag/drop any files if I were to uninstall the Adaptec DirectCD?? That implies to CD-RW rite? When I try to paste a file onto the CD-RW without formatting it first, there will be an error message stating this:

Cannot create or replace part10: Access is denied

Make sure the disk is not full or write portected.

I'm sure that the file is independent.

When you format it you are formatting it for directCD "drag&drop" use.
If you don't format it you can't use it like that.
If you do format it you can use it like that, but it costs about 100MB of CD space.

If you don't have directCD (or another packetCD program) on your computer you can't use drap&drop writing.

With Nero you drag/drop from Windows Explorer/My Computer to the Nero window. After "composing" a burn session (by dragging all the files you want into Nero, you click the "Burn" button. After burning a disc, you can't change it (unless it's a CD-RW but then you can only erase the entire disc).

Needless to say, it's not *quite* as convenient as DirectCD, but then again it's compatible with other computers and gives you more storage.

- DirectCD = CD-RW only
- DirectCD uses PacketCD writing (as Noriaki said) which enables drag/drop within Windows Explorer
- DirectCD discs are useless on computers without DirectCD installed
- Nero creates audio discs you can play in any audio CD player straight from MP3s

Hope this helps
