If you're having problems with a brand name machine (Compaq) and you format it to try and fix the issue, does this disallow you to send the machine back? (within 30 days of purchasing)

Wouldnt think so....you should have a warranty of atleast a year, i know on dell thats as low as it goes... if formatting negates the warranty, then turning on the computer should negate it too.

Sounds about right, but was wondering if anyone had experience in doing this. I don't see how they'd even know you did the format until they received the machine back. I would also assume they if they resold the returned item, it would be reformatted with a new image anyhow.

I don't know first hand, but I would be *very* surprised if that was the case. It makes no sense.

But didn't it include reinstall CD's so you can just reload the os instead of risking it?
