Format of data sent to wireless network card?

If i wanted to build a standalone device with a microprocessor module and a wireless nic, (and perhaps some other components) what kind of protocol will the processor have to "talk" to the NIC in, as far as passing info back and forth wirelessly?

You can purchase wireless transceiver chips. If you tried to build one from discreet components, it would be bigger than your PC.

Try places like www.mouser.com.

Instead of a microprocessor, you may want to look into using a microcontroller (Microchip, Atmel, Zilog ...). Some of them have "demo boards" complete with Ethernet. IrDA, and wireless (though the wireless may or may not be 802.11).
