format command in win2k

it gives me an error "volume is open or in use. request can not be complete." i don't have it open at all . there is nothing in that drive.

are you right clicking on the partition and choosing format? is the hard drive even partitioned?

is it a new drive?

You cannot format the system boot drive in W2k from within W2k.

You'll either have to use a bootup disk, or re-install.

You can certainly format any of the other available drives though....use Disk Management.

You can use a 3rd party app to do it though....but not natively.

As edblor has mentioned, you can?t format C: drive (boot partition) within it self. Must format using a boot floppy/cd (format c: /fs:fat32) or mount the hdd onto another computer, and reinstall the OS.

The best solution is to use Partition Magic or Partition Manager to resize & convert your drive to fat32.
