I am really tempted by the new BMW S1000R...

Yes, it is a literbike in every sense of the word. I may have to go ride one of these beasts when my local dealer gets one.

That headlight pod is hideous but the rest of the bike looks pretty fucking amazing.

Jesus that's an ugly front end.

BMW really likes putting two different kinds of headlights on their bikes for some reason. It probably has got some pretty impressive specs though and the side view is pretty nice. That's a huge fucking radiator though.

Radiator on top, oil cooler on the bottom. But yeah, it is huge.

160hp and 83 pound-feet of torque.

That exhaust is ugly too but I'm sure that could be fixed with an aftermarket pipe.

That would be a pretty good-looking bike if you ripped off the front fairings. And burned them.

Go ride one. The BMW is an amazing feat of technology and design. But if you still love the Ducati riding experience, I think you'll pass on on the Beemer.
How much fun will the BMW be on the street? Probably never have to take it out of 1st gear.

It boils down to this:
S1000R.....................83.0 lb.-ft. at 9,250 rpm
Monster 1200S........91.8 lb-ft @ 7,250 rpm

Where do you want to spend your time, 7k or 9k?

Yeah the BMW bikes have gross looking front ends... But the rest of the bike looks sweet. Performance is amazing, too.

You don't see the front end when you are riding though..So..

One of the guys in our group at deals gap had one a couple of years ago..
Its ugly as sin in the front, but what a piece of technology. The go fast that is built into it is insane.

 This bike isn't available for sale yet. It won't be in showrooms until April.

Perhaps you're thinking of the S1000RR?

I am not a fan of the aesthetics, nor am I a motorcyclist, but as a BMW enthusiast I love it that they are dominating the literbike market.

I'm not sure that's true actually. They do make the best in class literbike but as far as sales go I'm pretty sure the Japanese big 4 rule supreme. The BMW is still about $1000 more expensive than the Japanese literbikes.

Yeah they are nowhere near dominating the literbike market, or any market really. Even adventure touring is full of popular choices.

That being said, love the platform and love their bikes. I had a k1200r for a year or so, and it was weird due to the front fork design but I enjoyed it.

Wouldn't be much fun imo. I'd bet you'd have more fun on a torque-y bike like the ducati you have now as you would a screamer like that. Sure on a wide open track or deserted highway give me the 200mph beast. For day to day you can't beat a 100 hp torque monster.

I tend to agree with you. I've ridden some of these bikes and I'm always glad to get off them with my license intact. The MV Agusta Brutale 1090R comes to mind... it is fast as hell but not that much fun to ride around town on.

I mean dominating in terms of performance. I can't imagine they are doing anything like dominating in terms of sales. I just like seeing them apply their engineering might to something with such resounding success.

Most people can't exploit the levels of performance these bikes are capable of anyway, myself included, so it's kind of a moot point. The differences between bikes of this caliber are so small it just comes down to magazine racing and bragging rights... kind of like cars only moreso.

indeed.

as far as literbikes go, the S1000RR / HP4 and the Kawsaki ZX10R take the cake IIRC.

I still <3 yamahas though, even though I'm currently riding for team green :p

Oh, definitely. I would be scared out of my wits on any modern sportbike over 600cc, particularly a literbike. That being said, one thing I admire about motorcycles is that I could easily afford a truly state of the art, scorching fast bike, whereas I can't and probably never will be able to afford a comparable car. It's largely an academic discussion but I do love the idea of it (which, among other reasons, is why I am not shitting on this thread the way you shit on every supercar thread).
