Chinese firm to compete with PS2, Gamecube, Xbox

Ambitious plans for game consoles
By the INQUIRER, 28/05/2002 09:25:19 BST

A REPORT IN THE TAIWANESE press claims a Chinese company will attack Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft by introducing its own video game consoles.
The Economic News quoted the chairman of Sichuan Changhong Electric ? a massive TV firm on the mainland, as saying that his firm will take a lead from Sony.

Changhong ? which made 12 million TV sets last year -- has already approached a number of Taiwanese manufacturers with a view to making the consoles, the newspaper reports.

It has plants in China but is also building a factory in Russia.

The firm has already approached a Taiwanese chip firm, Sunplus, to design microcontrollers for the machines, and is also talking to some Japanese majors.

The newspaper reports that the firm will take on Sony with its PS2, Nintendo with its Gameboy and Gamecube, and Microsoft with its Xbox.

The time scale for the Chinese venture appears to be two years.

Fourth? There's barely room for a third. Historically, one has always all-but-died-out in a three-way battle (c'mon, you remember the brief stint of the Turbo Grafx 16 :)).

As for this new console... good luck. :D

But thanks for the interesting read.

I think I read/heard rumors about this a while ago, but it'd still be nice to have some details and stuff. :) Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Good for them - I'm interested to see them release the system and have it cracked and pirated within a matter of days....

China is crazymad about pirating...

PS2 and GameCube are both pretty much established in the market, imo.

Sony got the incredible number of user base since PS1. Nintendo got loyal followers of Mario, Zelda, Metroid and other 3rd-party games (i.e. Rare's GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, etc.)

X-Box will only grow in their market share and they got some very nice games coming out soon.

They are all here to stay, imo. The 4th console will have a very tough time.

The 4th console will have to get INCREDIBLE developer support, raise a massive advertising budget, and sport inconceivable specs blowing away the big 3 before it can compete.

Add to that the fact that both Americans and Japanese are particularly brand-loyal and will be hesitant to pick up on a product offered by a totally no-name company.

Realize that this 4th console would only need to do well in China to carve out a large-ass market. Besides, chances are this console will just be a regionless emulator box that plays GC, PS2 and X-Box games.... which we could all want. ;)

two years from now it will be easy to get the sort of graphics that one expects from a console today, and you'll still be competitive (okay, ps3 might be on the horizon at the time). so it could be cheap if they were thinking along that route. which it appears to be with the no-name people they've got (though artx is no name)

Well it could work. That's the exact same reason why XBox is still around here ...

Unless this game console comes with it's own TV, CD/DVD Player, telephone, and AM/FM stereo for under $300, I wouldn't see it being all that popular in China. Most Chinese people don't have nearly as much disposable income as we do, and many of them can't even afford the TV required for a game console to run.

Of course, the video game market is already flooded with competiting consoles all over the rest of the world (don't forget that PS One, N64, and Sega Dreamcast units are still popular in some areas), and there aren't enough big game developers out there to deliver top titles to all of the different systems out there. One more gaming system is just going to make the number of available titles for each console even worse.

Oh, and anyone who thinks that the X-Box is dead must be smoking crack. Tons of quality titles are coming out for it this summer, and even more will be available by Christmas. Combine that with their big and upcoming online gaming network, and you have a major competitor.

you can't know if they're quality until you can actually play the game. pretty screenshots don't make a game quality.

and i wouldnt' be surprised if it was damn cheap with cheap games if they are going for the chinese and other similar markets

"But son, you already have a Feinwang!"
