Soup isn't as thick and isn't cooked as long. Stew is thicker than soup, and cooked over a longer period.

In terms of thickness
Soup -> Chowder -> Stew
Stew's thickness comes from a conglomerate of vegetables and other things (usually BEEF)

Hmm..

I've always considered soup to be.. well, soupy.. and stew to be thick and rich.

If the gravy is thickened, I call it stew. If the gravy is thin (water-like), it's soup. Of course, then you have cream soups... I guess that they're different because they have next to no chunks, just the broth.

soup = more liquid than solid
stew = more solid than liquid

no solid = soup regardless of thickness (within a reasonable range, too thick = neither)
