Blowing that all on one thing seems silly. I would do this:

$3000 HDTV
$2000 NAS (WiFi enabled) - couple TB storage.
$2000 PC for gaming (wifi connected to NAS)
$2000 HTPC (WiFi connected to NAS - inputs to HDTV)
$1000 fee to me to spec it all out for you.
 
Get a Mac Pro with Final Cut HD for editing 🙂 That should be a good chunk of change. Then use Boot Camp to go into XP for gaming and stuff.
 
See here's the thing - the stuff in my sig is pretty much top of the line in many regards, and after the rebates come back, I'll probably have spent ~$3500. Add a second 8800GTX (and change the motherboard for one that can do SLI) for $550, I already have a 24" monitor, but you can add a 30" Dell for $1700, a larger psu prolly runs +$100, and I already have ProMedia 5.1s, but you could drop some cash on some of those (~400-500) or go all out as mentioned above for a couple thousand...and you're still not at $10k.

Do you have some sort of theater room for when you seriously want to watch something, or is this the one and only system?

What kind of room do you have?

You say the display has to fit on your desk - is that due to room constraints / budget options or is that really what you were intending for your ideal setup?
 
30inch LCD for the main display
Core 2 Duo E6600 or better
4GB of ram
pair of 8800GTX video cards(need that much power to drive 2560x1600 resolution)
invest in a GOOOD power supply
for OS and Apps ... hardware SCSI raid card, raid 10 array of current gen Seagate or Hitachi drives.
For Storage ... 4 x new hitachi 1TB drives, or maybe seagate 750GB drives, then put them in a raid 10 array.
Buy a nice Antec case or if you want flashy looking, go with Lian Li.
IBM Model M keyboard, or if you want top of the line, Das Keyboard ...
Buy a good mouse
I have no idea what the cost up to this point is. However, if there is still money left, then get more displays.

This is my only system. I just want a computer for my desk at home to replace my laptop and have the fun (challenge) of building it myself. I am afraid I budgeted to much. I thought top of the line parts would be more expensive. Thanks for all the interest. This is a great website!

the issue is that you can do more than you want for probably 1/2 that or less. many people here like to save some $$$ regardless of their income or net worth. personally i am a deal whore thus the conservative system in sig - it does what i need it to and didn't run me much in the $$$ dept (i didn't pay close to the ~$600 that my 15k.5 should have).

as for audio, you are going to be very limited by your room - hell even a modest decent home theater setup can push over 110dbs of clean music or soundtrack in a ~12x12 room and you can be into that for less than $2K with very good quality parts that will last you a long time. imho there is quite a difference when comparing "computer" speakers and home theater speakers and i would go for the latter for quality of components used, quality of sound and the lifetime of the setup.

by putting a budget of $10K some may have thought you to be smug at first but since it sounds like you are serious there are many ways to build some excellent items and you can invest that remainder of what you save in at least a high yield saving acct like ing, so in order of importance, what will the computer be used for?

well, what kind of experience do you look forward to?

A. you are looking strictly for a working desktop + games and other entertainment

B. you want the full monty, with the audio / video accoutrements

if the answer is B, as it should be, you can wizz right through $10k.


me personally, it's unlikely i'd spend more than $2500 on the PC itself. the remaining 75% would go towards hi-fi gear driven by the PC. Let us know your revised budget and we can offer up solid suggestions. and welcome to AT
 
Doesn't seem like very utiliarian set of choices. For 10k you can get a hell of a lot of more stuff, simply by not paying the premium of the "very very best," which won't give you much utility beyond the one price point below it.
 
Seems like you're spending money just to spend money. Is there something you want this computer to do that a normal setup couldn't handle?

From your original post, it looks like you'll be using it for general purposes, in which case this system is complete overkill. If this is the case, buy a normal system and spend the rest on some nice video and audio equipment.

Chiming in to say both "wow" and "don't back up to a USB flash drive".

Get backup drives or tapes or something, but I would not use flash memory for permanent storage of anything. Even a couple of 750Gb USB-attached SATA drives would do well.
