How hard is it to get through these to the sophomore level. I am trying to get the Dean to subsitute computer competency for the language, but I really don't think that will happen, but I am hopeful.

It probably be spanish or french, also consider the fact that I have never taken a language before.

Thanks Todd

I took 2 years of Spanish in high school, and found it very easy to learn... never attempted French, though..

Go for German! No only is it mostly useless here in the states...it's sister language to English!!! You're already a step ahead!

(Unless maybe you live in the Virginia area where i know there's a kinda strong german community....but they all speak English anyway.....and if you go to Germany trying to speak German, they'll just start speaking english to you and make you feel dumb.....and stuff)

try learning english first. :D

GOOD advice, B4 taking on another language, you should know your native tongue backwards & forwards, it helps a lot & I am not trying to be funny

English is the easiest language to learn cuz it's common.

Take spanish if you're into business.. or maybe chinese....

both are very useful IMO..

I know three languages, all from different linguistic families. It can be done, but you have to start early.

I really liked Russian. It's not as hard as people think, and as my professor Dr Dyer said
"Every 7 year old kid in Russia can speak it, why can't you 18 year old High School graduates?"

I speak Spanish well enough to get by, and I could speak French pretty well as a child. Thanks Muzzy!

I took Spanish for 4 years in high school. It's alright, but I never really got into it. Shouldn't be terribly difficult, but there are those many rules for conjugation and the dozens of irregular verbs + conjugation forms you'll wind up memorizing if you take that route.

If you want to learn something much different than English, look at an asian languae, such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Russian and Latin might be quite challenging if you're up to it as well.

I've taken a semester of Japanese at a community college -- was pretty easy since I already knew a bit. Someone told me that the first few language courses in college primarily cater to those who simply need to take it...so I can only imagine what an upper division language course is like. Not to say that language courses are easy for everyone, as they demand time for memorizing new words, grammar rules, etc.

I see no relation or equivalency between computer and foreign languages (at least as far as requirements go) but strangely my graduate program drpped its foreign language exam for computer languages a few years ago. IMO a big mistake.

Harder than Dutch? Dutch consists mostly of exceptions to rules.

You could always learn Arabic; that way you're pretty much guaranteed a job at the CIA...

Naah, German is far easier to learn, and has far less exceptions to rules than Dutch.
