foreign mcdonalds

i've alwaYs had the impression that:

Foreign mcdonals are cheaper
their Big Macs have a bigger piece of meat than ours
they don't have 1/4 pounders.

What are your experiences with mcdonald in foreign countries?

I went to one in Prague, Czech Republic. It SUCKED! For one, everything is in Czech of course, and the cute girl behind the counter can't understand a lick of what you're saying. I asked for a quarter pounder with cheese and got 2 tofu pita pockets that were supposed to be chicken I think. The place was clean, everyone was uniformed, same kinds of machines behind the counters with people in hats scurrying about and scooping fries, and the surroundings looked about identical to what you would find in the States. It was an interesting experience for sure. 🙂

ive only been to mcdonalds in japan and australia (ive managed to avoid it in every other country ive visited)

australia - (aka Maccas) same as the US but with kangaroo/wallabe meat (jk 😉) but they have super cheap soft serve cones 20 cents US

japan - they have 1/4 pounders but they also have funny japanese versions like teriyaki burgers and rice buns among other things. oh and most of them here dont have mcflurries or soft serve (the only two things i like at mcdonalds)

but i really dislike mcdonalds food, can believe we sent them out as fast food emissaries to the world

edit - australias prices are about the same, japans are higher

As soon as I saw this thread the first thing I thought of was the conversation near the beginning of pulp fiction.

----
Vincent: Well, in Amsterdam, you can buy beer in a movie theatre. And I don't mean in a paper cup either. They give you a glass of beer, like in a bar. In Paris, you can buy beer at MacDonald's. Also, you know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?
Jules: They don't call it a Quarter Pounder with Cheese?
Vincent: No man, they got the metric system there, they wouldn't know what the fvck a Quarter Pounder is.
Jules: What'd they call it?
Vincent: Royale with Cheese.
Jules: Royale with Cheese. What'd they call a Big Mac?
Vincent: Big Mac's a Big Mac, but they call it Le Big Mac.
Jules: Le Big Mac... What do they call a Whopper?
Vincent: I dunno, I didn't go into a Burger King. But you know what they put on french fries in Holland instead of ketchup?
----

I have eaten at them in London and Paris. The little hamburgers were pretty much the same. The diet cokes are WAY better over there than here (seemed like they were sweeter). Their mayonaise (or whatever they put on their chicken sandwiches (this goes for Burgerking too)) is sorta sweet and I didn't like it (this was in London). I do remember them having McBeer in Paris. Don't drink so dunno what it was like.

Portions as best I can remember were the same size and it was more expensive (though this could be due to it being the big tourist cities). A combo would have been like $5 USD.

most foreign mickey d's have local foods added on to the base menu to attract more customers, tacos, salads, and local cuisine come to mind

McDonalds's prices generally vary with the price levels of the countries in which they are located. The Economist even has a "Big Mac Index" which supposedly serves as a tangible way to compare price levels between countries since food at MickeyD's is procured locally, as is the labor, and prices are set by the franchisees. It's in the back of the mag.

Wow! In my experience, you're wrong on every count. I believe I've been to McDonalds in Britain, Italy, Greece, Germany, Czech Republic, and Austria from what I remember and they were all $7+ for a combo meal, had the same size burgers, and offered a Quarter Pounder or equivalent burger. I like being able to get a beer with my burger, but I hate being charged for kwtchup. :|

when i last got mcdonalds in hong kong it was about the same costwise. they didn't have supersize. portions weren't bigger at all.

pizza hut on the other hand had some gross changes. i ordered some weird chicken pizza that had to tomato sauce and very little cheese, it was sooo gross. they had normal pizza too but why order that when u can get it at home. 😉

Yea, when I was in New Zealand they had this thing on the menu called a Kiwi Burger. It was a basically a quarter pounder with cheese with a fried egg and a slice of beet on it. yuck. Needless to say, I didn't try it.

In Germany it is more expensive, the piece of meat is the same size, and they do have 1/4 pounders (different name).

I went to mcdonalds in thailand. it was just under 3 bucks for any of the value meals. Menu was similiar and it tasted more or less the same. it was less greasy actually.

other items on the menu, porkburner, and some rice and pork patty. didnt try them

Try visiting McDonalds over here in the Netherlands. What is sold as a small Coke in the US is just about sold as large one here, for more money than large Cokes over there. Same with other stuff. Food/drinks in Sweden is expensive in general, doubt McDonalds will be cheap there either.

If heavily depends on which country.
