i'm writing a paper that covers multicultural classes and one of my points involves the requirement of foreign languages. to save me the time of looking over a lot of university requirement websites, if you would, name your college what the foreign language requirements are...

for example...my school

st. edwards university - two 3-hour courses

No foreign language requirement, but we do have a "foreign cultures" requirement that students usually satisfy with a language.

YOu must be "proficient" in a foreign language.
If you don't have prior experience with a language that means taking two semesters of one.

For B.A. - 12 hours (4 semesters)
For B.S. - None.

I got a B.S. Suckers.

Edit: Is your paper arguing against the requirement of multicultural classes?

B.A. - completement of a language at the 4th level (if starting from first year, you must take 100, 101, 200, 201...or some higher ones other than 201)
B.S. - completement of a language at the second level (100, and 101...unless you test right into 101).

It depends on what college you are in, but in mine, which is John Muir, you can take a language to fulfill a GE.
If you do that, you need to take 3 quarters

University of Georgia:

As far as I know, anyone enrolled in the college of arts and sciences is required to take 3 semesters (one 3-hour, and two 4-hour classes) worth of a foreign language. English and history majors (which might also apply to all BAs, now that I think about it) are required to take four semesters (one 3-hour, and three 4-hour classes) worth.

I don't believe that any other college requires foreign language, other than maybe the International Business major.

Lipscomb University (Nashville, TN)...
BA: 10 hours (two 5-hour classes)
BS: none

This foreign language requirement is the only difference between BA and BS at Lipscomb.

at psu-up if u werent already 'proficient' u had to take up to 3 semesters worth (usually about 4hrs/wk)

not sure of everyone it was required for but i had pre-med/finance/criminal justice majors in my classes, so i'm guessing just about everyone.

Depends on your major. My original major, Biochemistry, required 4 semesters at 3 credits per semester. My actual major, Food Science, did not require any that I am aware of. I ended up getting two years worth of German though.

3 quarters, you can place out by taking a test
(Forgein Language required for School of letters and Sciences only, not engineering)

4 semester proficiency, so either 4 semesters or however many classes you need to take based on your grades. an SAT II score of 550 or so gets you out of it, or you could just take a 4th semester class if you place into it.

University of Southern California -- 3 semesters

Exceptions: engineering (except for CS), architecture and business majors don't have to take any

You can test out of these courses too.

Clemson University, Computer Science department, no foreign language requirement.

Don't know what other departments require, though.

University of North Dakota - No general foreign language requirements, but a number of majors require them. I have to have 2 4-credit units of a language for Political Science (my second major). For Criminal Justice I need either 4 units of a language or a minor or second major.
