I was curious about that the other day. I was reading about the 2.0l replacement and they mentioned a dual clutch, but that got me wondering, what dual clutch? I'd still like to know about GM though.

People still buy lousy 4-speed autos?

Of course. They are the bread and butter of Domestic US model ranges.

Yea they should have used a 5 speed auto like in the BMWs. You know the 5 speed auto that GM designed and built and then BMW bought to use in their cars.

6 speed auto, BTW, and pretty much 2007+ 328 is only one that using GM's. (Other models = ZF) It's so funny to see GM can make such fine tranny for others, while their own cars get outdated 4 speed auto. Can someone explain why 211HP/214ft-lbs 3.5L V6 Impala has 4 speed auto?

I don't know if the intent was to try and make me feel stupid, as a known BMW owner, but if I were you I'd just feel stiffed even harder by that trans not being offered on GM's own product for years in the home market.

FYI: GM are not the sole supplier of Auto transmissions to BMW.

I've got the 4 speed 3.5L in our Malibu and it gets over 30MPG on the highway as it is. In town is around 22MPG. Why does it need a 5 speed? The 4 speed carries it around just fine and I can't really think of one time driving the car where I sat there thinking "boy I wish I had an extra gear!".

People get way too way worked up in gearing numbers.

Because it works, is cheaper, and a lot of cars with more gears do not get better milage.

Like the Corvette has a 6 speed manual, yet top speed is in 5th gear. More gears don't equal better milage by themselves. In fact it could add more weight and cut performance and milage.
Just like adding OHCs doe snto work for all cars.

Just because you can does not mean it is best.

I sitll think trucks need traditional 4 speed autos for towing...though they are not the norm anymore.

I have a 2004 Silverado with the 5.3L V8 and the 4L60E 4 speed auto. It's design goes back to the 700R4 (non-electronically controlled 4L60E basically) and basically without overdrive it dates back to the TH350 which was in a lot of GM vehicles in the 60s and 70s.

I have 3.73 gears and I am around 1800-1900RPMs at 70MPH. It'd be nice to have a granny low I imagine, but I can hit OD at 45-50 and lug the engine all day long around 1200-1300RPMs.

Of course you can also by a 4 cyl, 6 speed auto Malibu. The low torque Malibu need the 6 speed much more than the V6 Impala.
