Ford Mustang experts - which model mustang is this?

here's the mustang convertible I'll be looking at tomorrow at an auction. I have about $4k to spend on a summer car, but I probably won't bid more than $1500 on this one.

All I have is the following information until I inspect it tomorrow.

It's a '92 5.0 w/ stick shift. I plan on driving it as a second "fun" car for the summer, then I'll probably sell it. What do you all think? I'm trying to guage the value by the model, is it an LX or a GT?

I think it's an LX because there's no ground effects, am I right? Also, wouldn't it say it's a GT on the side of the car? What's the difference between an LX 5.0 and a GT?

anything I should look for as far as defects? I won't be bidding that high on it because we can't drive the vehicle, we can only turn it on. This is all the auction allows.

I figure it'd be a fun car for tooling around town in.

5.0 != LX, AFAIK. I have never heard of an LX 5.0. LX just just the inferior model to the GT. Sometimes you'll hear people refer to the current v6 mustang as an LX. Back in that body style, you had to be really careful with the LX'es b/c some of them were actually 4 bangers

Ground effects == neon lights, not sure what you're talking about there... can you show us pics of these "ground effects"?

I'm not sure what you're confused about... the GT's of that era had "5.0" on the side.

for instance, this one:

says mustang GT underneath the door on the gruond effects..I think that's what they're called. it's an extension of the car beyond the underneath of the door and underneath the headlights

I figured out what they're called:

more like a "ground effects kit", which consists of

Front Air Dam, 2 Side Skirts, and a Rear Bumper Valance..on the side skirt, it says mustang GT

but this doesn't have the side skirts, yet it says 5.0...were ther 5.0 LX's made?

Definitely an LX.

That should be a fun car to play with. I've been tinkering with the idea of getting a 88-92 5 liter Mustang convertible to play with too.

That's a 5.0L LX.

acemcmac: LX is just the body style, ie: plain, no ground effects or wings or louvers like a GT. LX 5.0L 5 speeds are the bomb. They are lighter than the GT and faster. The 5.0L LX also has the GT suspension and tires and rims. It can be a hatchback or notchback.

Yes, 5 liter LX's were definitely made. And if you are gonna get an LX the 5 liter is the one to get because the lesser engined LX's were equiped with 4-lug wheels as opposed to the 5-lug GT type wheels along with a bunch of other similar differences.

what do you guys think would be a decent amount to spend on that? I just came up with the $1500 amount off the top of my head. it's got 111k miles

5.0L still had 4 lug wheels.

check the black 87 LX.

Edit: seems some have 4 and some have 5. I remember seeing a lot of GT's with 4 lugs.

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure they fixed that starting in 1988.

I know that Ford offered a 5 lug conversion kit back then.

My friend had a 1987 LX 5.0L 5 speed car. He had 4 lugs and was complaining about it.

I think your number is good. I definitely wouldn't go over $2,000. The thing about these cars is that they are cheap because the insurance rates are insane for younger drivers. I guess this is one of the perks of being older and a good driver. 😀

I wouldnt pay more than that.

Forgot which year they switched to the 5 lug wheels, doesnt really matter though I wouldn't think if your driving the car around stock. Had an 89GT 5.0 and it still had four and never had any problems.

Only difference between LX and the GT 5.0's was the ground effects and the tail lights.
The GT's had an ugly cheese grater looking tail lights.

If you could get it for 1500 I would go for it.

Last year some guy was selling his 1989 Mustang 5.0L LX, 80,000 km, a handfull of options and excellent condition for $5,000 CDN.

I think he was asking $2,000 more than it was worth.

Yes, it's definitely an LX. Yes, it has 4-lug wheels, like nearly all fox body cars did. The only problem with the 4-lug setup is that there are fewer aftermarket rims for it.

Here's My old LX 5.0.

There's nothing in specific to look for that's wrong with it -- that's to say there's no particularly high failure rate parts on the car, but it's almost 15 years old, anything on it could be broken. Check for everything you'd check on any old car. The AC should blow cold, it shouldn't blow blue smoke out the back when you start it, the oil pressure should be good, etc.

I wouldn't buy it though, just cause it's a convertible. It's heavier, flexier, likely to leak (especially after 15 years), and doesn't look as good, IMO. I'd wait for a hardtop model.

Yeah the one to go for is the LX coupe/notchback which is what I have 🙂. Text

The only 79-93 mustang to ship with 5 lugs was the SVO atleast from Ford.

The thing went for $3700 at the auction. + 10% buyer's fee + taxes brings it to around $4200 ...Of course, I didn't buy. Amazing what some people are willing to pay

I was kinda looking for a 5.0 LX for a while. They still carry a hefty price. They are great because there is still a huge and cheap aftermarket product line up for them. I would say you had a very slim chance to get a conv model for only $1500.

My uncle has a '92 LX 5.0 (chip, K&N, Flowmasters, traction bars, gears, etc)...it's fast.

Maybe you'll get lucky next time. 🙂
