Ford loves its big, V-8 cash cows

True. Too bad the same can't be said for the Ranger, which is just showing it's age. It would be nice if Ford redesigned both the Ranger and the Crown Vic though. Might even pull some sales from Buick or other old people cars 🙂

Consider how incredible reliable the Crown Vic has been. I have a '92, and in the 5 years I've owned it, the only thing that went wrong with it was a IAC Valve, which cost me $30 and 1 hour to replace. Not bad for a 12 year old.

A new Ranger is coming. 😉 Would you like a V8 with it too?

What point are you trying to make, thats all I am asking. Ford makes money on their cars? ummm ok...

I posted a link to an article about cars. What point do you not understand? It's a thread about cars and how big a profit margin Ford makes on the Crown Vic, assuming 7000 is their profit and 23k is the selling price - that's a 30% margin. There is no fanboi point to this thread. If you don't like, stfu, go read your 13 year old Xanga websites that interest you.

considering GM averages a profit of $550 per car (according to radio) which includes GMC, cadiillac, chevy, hummer, ford's doing well on these cars

I don't get the point you are trying to make either. Any corporation will change thier products if the demand for change is there. Fleet sales are very important to every manufacturer.

I do argue about the $7k-$10k profit margin they are talking about, as I just read an article in Ward's that said the average profit car manufacturer's (not dealers) make per vehicle is $127.00.

Have you driven that too? 🙂 A V8 would be nice, although unnecessary if they can tweak a mid level engine to get more power. (Like the I5 in the Colorado) As it is, Ford needs to do some tweaking of the V8's in the F150 before they mess with the Ranger. The 4.6 is still underpowered, and the new 5.4 is getting spanked by the Titan and the Hemi.

I'm a teenager and I like a full-size V8. I have a Mercury Marauder which shares the same Panther platform, but has upgraded drivetrain components. I personally love my car. It has room to bring friends, remain comfortable (I'm in no way cramped in my car), and to be functional. Plus it still has enough power to beat any ricer out there. I still love faster smaller cars, but I think the car I have is a great compromise, and I would be pissed if my father decided to get rid of it. Also, all of these cars are niche vehicles. They are not for everyone, but those who purchase them, purchase them for a reason.

HAHAHA, ok whatever, chill the hell out first off. Second, oh how I wish I was 13 again. Third, was there anyone left that didnt know that there were huge profit margins on the grand marquis and the crown vic, I mean any car they can offer a $8k rebate on has to have a huge profit margin.

That WAS the whole point, that Ford makes a very good profit off those two vehicles. They make as much profit off of it as most vehicle manufacturer's make off of their traditional cash cows (Trucks and SUV's).

Viper GTS

I ain't happy with it. It's too GD small inside. The engine's also too small. This Chrysler probably ain't any bigger, but at least it will have some balls! Like to see MANY more of this type car hit the streets.

Volvo HPT 2.3L I-5 in a ranger would be pretty sweet.......

You're the one who misinterpreted a neutral comment about Ford as a "japcrap fanboy post." Maybe if you weren't so ignorant, you'd get a little respect.

Thank you.

And btw, the title of my post is the title of the article. This is not my point to be made - it's the authors. Flame him, not me.

I like that Ford hasn't changed the Crown Vic. It's a solid, classic design that works.

It doesn't need to handle like a sports car, it doesn't need to carry cargo, and doesn't need 4wd.

Chevy could have done the same with the Caprice but they blew it.

Frdm51742--I see alot of thread crapping from you and it's annoying. If you don't have anything to add, why not just shut up?

As for the article, talk about cash cows! 80% of Crown Vics to fleet sales and no major redesigns for years and years. Big, simple, powerful and quiet. These cars are like the antithesis of the buzzy Japanese 4 bangers that are everywhere.

Chevy has killed (or redesigned into crap) most of my favorite products. The only things I like anymore are their trucks and the Corvette. I would not go to them for anything else.

I have seen a couple of design models for the new Ranger. I have driven the Tremor when it was an early concept vehicle before the V8 Explorers were made production. I have seen prototype V8 Rangers, but Ford is not in a position to take on another CAFE restrictions and the torque is above the current driveline's capability. Ford is launching a 200 hp 4.0L V6 with the new mustang and that engine should find it was into the Ranger in 05. The Ranger platform will have to be widened to handle the additional power a 4.0L V8 would produce.
