The Sport Edition will have the Duratec 2.5L V6, which is a great engine. It's reliable, and has tons of power for a car that size. The GL has the wheezy Zetec 2.0L I4 that really is too small for that car.

I'm not sure on the price of that particular car, but it sounds like you got a good deal. The only thing that matters is that you like the car. :D

ummm....this is what carfax says...

Year/Make/Model: 1998 FORD CONTOUR/GL/SPORT/LX

Body Style: SEDAN 4 DR
Engine: 2.0L L4 PFI 16V DOHC
Fuel: GASOLINE
Driveline: FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
Carburetion: FUEL INJECTED
Cylinders: 4
Manufactured in: UNITED STATES

shouldn't the sport model be the v6? (according to the last post anyways)

i'm confused

Looks like someone added the Sport sticker... :( All of the Sport models i've seen up here in Canada had a V6. It may be different in the US, stranger things have happened.

the guy says that the sports means it's a 16 valve...that the valve number is the diff

hmmmm....can the sports sticker be warrant enough to void the contract made with the dealer?

Not to be a dick, but you could open the hood and look at the engine.

I would have haggled the price... the 'Tour GL had the 16v i4 motor which was what most people considered anemic.

The SE, it had the 24v 2.5L Duratec V6 which is a great motor. It was used as a base variant with 175hp/150ft lbs (I think) and the SVT model got the port and polished version (200hp/164ft lbs)along with upgraded McPhearson struts in the front as well as a SVT flywheel, SVT rims, SVT Bodykit, and SVT Dual exhaust.

the zetec is always 16 valve. open the hood and look at what the engine says. the block should tell you what it is.

Yeah, that DuraTech V6 is a sweet motor. I have one in my '99 Cougar, and it runs smooth and has great power.

I just sold my 98 Contour SE Sport on Saturday for 6800. It had 44k miles. For a second I thought it was you who bought it since it was almost the exact same specs. Mine didn't have a CD changer in the back though, so it wasn't you. :) But yeah, I think you got a good price, I was hoping to get more than just 6800 for mine. Having owned it 3 years, I'd have bought it for that much had a been looking for another car.

does anyone know (in general) if adding an intake or supercharger would void the extended warranty?

If its a Votec supercharger the warrenty will not be voided becuase vortec chargers are complete bolt ons. My buddy has a 98 SVT Contour - thats a bad as car!

Regular K&N wouldn't void it, however Ford is notorious for being assholes with aftermarket parts since the Foxbody Mustang. Supercharger or a CAI would definately void your warranty.

edit- the supercharger has a warranty that it will not fvsk up your car. It would be with Vortec. Ford won't touch 'em unless its a stock component.

You bought a car and you don't even know what model it is and what engine it has? Got balls my friend, lol :p

My sister & brother-in-law have a contour...I installed a new headunit for them. Personally I think they're a bit ugly, but not too bad.
