Ford builds the perfect Lexus/Audi/VW clone..Ford Five-Hundred ;)

<< Not bad, not bad. What is a continuously variable transmission? Same as a regular tranny but has some miniscule feature? >>

No, it has a theoretically infinite number of gear ratios.

In otherwords it's an auto tranny with better efficiency/performance than a manual.

Viper GTS

Is having the front end of a Lexus supposed to be good? 😕

Anyway, it looks just like an updated version of the Ford Scorpio.

CVT...continuously variable transmission driven by a belt (or chain in Audi's case) and two discs. About as fuel efficient as a manual and smoother than an automatic.

Shades of the Contour it looks like.
"European styling"
"where we started with Mondeo in Europe" (Mondeo is the European nameplate for the Contour I believe)
"Duratech 3.0-liter V-6" (compared to the 2.5 in the 'tour)

I liked my Contour, but parts are expensive when they break and the resale sucks. Still, that 500 look pretty sweet. Doubt I could convince the wife to buy another Ford though. She's too happy with her Honda.

Am I missing something. The only pic I see is that artist rendering and you can't really see squat in that.

The artist rendering looks like a Lexus LS430 front with a VW/Audi profile/roof. Can you NOT see that?:Q

theoretically, the cvt should keep your engine spinning at a constant speed and adjusts the speed of the car by the gearing ratio.

this kinda takes away from the gas punch type feeling but it should keep ur engine near torque and hp peak rpm range.

since when did they start putting this in larger vehicles. wasn''t there a problem w/ belts being to weak to handle high torque?

I must say I never did like Toyota styling, and this Ford looks like a toyota (the front). American car that looks Japanese, nobody wants that. If you want a Japanese car, you buy a Japanese car, not a Ford. It's just a drawing though.

<<In otherwords it's an auto tranny with better efficiency/performance than a manual.>>

In theory. Sadly the torque converter still hurts the efficiency. If they were to combine an SMG-type clutch with a CVT, then we'd see some very impressive fuel efficiency numbers.

You guys are missing the point of this topic!!! Ford cant design any good cars on its own...so it bought companies that they can steal ideas from! i wouldnt be surprised if they get rid of all the car companies they own and start calling everything FORD.

I thought that CVT's didn't have a torque converter??:Q

Since Audi invented one 2 years ago.

<< Since Audi invented one 2 years ago. >>

since audi invented a high strength belt? or since audi invented the CVT? CVT's have been around for at least 15 to 20 yrs as far as i know. probably longer.

In the words of Picasso : Good artists copy...great artists steal...or something like that 😛

Ford Taurus in the 80's REDEFINED the american automobile. the Focus isn't copied. The lincoln LS is basically all Ford. the Explorers aren't copies. the F-150 is an orginal. WTF do you get the steal ides from everyone?

CVT's have been around for 100 years, just like electric cars. Audi invented a high strength metallic chain CVT two years, that now makes the technology economically feasible.

Welcome Anandtech, excuse the Rice Boys. They get ganged up on in the real world, but here they outnumber people with normal taste in cars so they can get away with making absurd statements. In short, if a car gets b|tched about here, it will be a big success in the real world. On the other hand, if a car gets rave reviews here, it's probably a Honda Civic with a coffee can tailpipe.

Cheers.

shantanu. u know what i meant. cvt for autos.

i didn't know about the cvt chain that audi invented. i haven't followed cars in like 15 yrs.

The idea of a CVT has no doubt been around for decades and decades. Pinpointing it is akin to pinpointing when the first game of baseball was ever played.

The modern implementation of the CVT for automobiles was done by the Dutch firm DAF, in the late '50's, around 1958, I believe. DAF made small cars and big trucks! The CVT was just for the cars. DAF was bought out by Volvo sometime in the 70's or 80's, before Volvo was itself bought out by Ford.

I read or participate in nearly all of the car threads around here, and this has NEVER been my experience. Rice bashing is a common occurence around here.

eh. its gonna be FWD. how many FWD cars can actually compete with japanese and german RWD cars? and even if it could, it's still a Ford.

I don't think Ford would do that. They know that any discriminating car buyer understands that Ford is a mediocre quality vehicle. Now I do believe this, they feel that their association with quality cars may help boost their sales and rescue them from the losses of late.

Anbody who test drives a Ford, then an Audi, Honda, Toyota knows the difference quality makes!
