Forcing vsync?

My monitor runs at 100 hZ. I need a way to set my vsync to keep the FPS under 100fps (specifically in unreal tournament). I've set the vsync setting to "application preference" in the ATI control pannel, and I see no setting in UT to enable it.

Basically, I need a way to keep the FPS at 100 or under, because I experience massive tearing (much more than normal) on my machine when it goes above 100. Maybe a command to set the MAX fps to 100???

Thanks :)

Why not just set vsync to "always on"? That's what I do. Vsync is 100% neccessary IMO. I always use it. Correct me if I'm wrong, video-gurus.

I would, but there's no setting for that, unless I'm missing something? All I see is in the OpenGL and Direct3D tabs, there's "Wait for Vertical Sync:", and the options are "Always Off" and "Application Preference"

You need to choose "wait for vertical sync". :D

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but "wait for vertical sync" isn't an option, but a title with sub options.

I.e, the layout is like this:

Wait for Vertical Sync: Always Off (check box here) Application Preference (check box here)

Always Off and Application Preference are the only two options... Kind of seems weird to me, but that's how it's layed out

-application preference

what drivers are you using? try the 4.4 cats they've seemed good ever since ati let the cat out of the bag.

Ah, that must be it. I'm using the 3.7's, because the newer ones were messing up with my 9800 pro. I'll try upgrading again later. Thanks for your help :)

Edit: No one by any chance knows a command to set the max FPS in UT2004, do they?

to force it in the game, open \ut2004\system\ut2004.ini and set this line under [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice]

UseVSync=True

well first of all u should periodically upgrade your drivers. anyway under the button custom in the 3d menu you can set the vsync in "always on" as sickbeast says, and this is the way u should go instead of looking for a wierd command that will fix your problem ONLY FOR ONE GAME, next time you play with another you will encounter the same so use card master driver to do that.

I, on the other hand, often prefer to play with it off. In some games, you get a massive frame rate reduction with vsync on. And if I can get a frame rate of 50 instead of 40, I will gladly do without vsync.

I suppose if I were getting enormous frame rates of 100+, I would turn vsync on, but that never happens on the games I play, since with antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, all bells and whistles turned on, and playing at 1600x1200 if I can, the chance of my getting some frame rate higher than my monitor's refresh rate is remote.

Yes, but if the frames aren't in sync with your refresh rate can you even see them? Not only that but doesn't it cause alot of flicker for you?

The worst I ever get is 30FPS, and it rarely happens so it's acceptable to me.

It usually looks fine with vsync turned off. Try it sometime and see how it looks.

Some people (like you, evidently) aren't really bothered by the 'tearing' artifacts that unsynced frames cause. It drives me nuts, so I have to play with VSync on or I'm constantly distracted by the flickering (at least in games where the framerates are well over the refresh of my monitor). Of course, I also get headaches if my desktop isn't set at 75Hz or higher...

Does anyone notice that there is a noticable increase in mouse/reticle response rate when you are running 100+ fps. This happens in counterstrike for me, i find 100fps much faster response than 75fps vsync'd. UT2003 is also noticeable.

Most definitely. Input response is tied to the framerate so it's good to have it as high as possible.

Using vsync often introduces noticeable drag and lag to your input.
