I have some files that WinXP Pro will not let me delete even in Safe mode not vital suff more like a couple Farcry game patches, remnants of uninstalled programs and folders etc..

When I try to delete these files/folders I get the " access denied!" pop up.

How can I make Win XP Pro delete these files?

Thanks for any help

Have you tried "safe mode with command prompt" and then using the command prompt? Thats what worked for me.

quick bump since I have this folder that I also cannot delete. I was able to delete the contents but not the folder itself.

As far as I can tell the folder is emtpy (View: all files).

I havent ried the safe mode command prompt. Whats the command line to delete a folder? My only skills in command prompt is I am able to navigate thru folders.

I am such a Windows slave.

Peace

Huh? In my situation I had a file which was in the "my documents" folder which i couldn't get to delete, so I restarted in normal safe mode - still wouldn't delete. Then i restarted in the "safe mode with command prompt" and when the command prompt came up immediately after clicking your name, i was able to delete that file no problem.

Of course if there is a more efficient way, then great. But I don't know one myself.

WTF? That is a great way to troubleshoot sometimes...

If anyone else has this problem I found this freeware program called MoveOnBoot that lets you select files you want moved or deleted and does it during re-boot.

I was able to delete several left over and unneeded files that WINXP would not let allow to be deleted.

Start/Run cmd
<ctrl><alt><del>
kill explorer.exe
in command line, del <filename>
In task manager File/Run explorer.exe

there are a few ways around these problems if you simply dont have permission to view or delete the file....open up my computer go to tools folder options and the tab view scroll all the way down and uncheck use simple file sharing then right click on the folder the file is in and select sharing and security.....click on the security tab and on the advanced button on the bottom...select the owner tab and click on your admin and check the replace ownership box at the bottom of the screen and click okay....this is great for getting rid of file from previous installs of xp and whatnot....the other trick if it is just some random file that is pesky...go to run and type cmd...then navigate to the folder that holds said file and cd.. so you are on level below it and simple type del and the folder name and it will delete its contents.....bam...that easy...no errors just eradication....lol...hope this helps somebody out there...
