DVD-DL is sort of a dead end. It's not projected to get any cheaper due to its pending doom. At this point, for large amounts of data backup, your options are either to wait for DVD-HD/Blu-Ray, use a lot of DVD+RW's, or use removable hard drives.
Where did get that idea? It's totally absurd.
The primary market of DL is the full-quality direct-copy piracy of movies. DL will be extremely widespread once it breaks the $5 barrier. Every idiot in the world will have a DVD-RW and a NetFlix subscription.
Blu-Ray will have almost no effect on the success of DVD+R DL. DVD movies are here now. 98% of them have two layers. You can buy a DL burner for $60.
Do you know when DVD's replacement will hit the market? Not likely; you don't even know
what it will be for sure. Do you know when there will be a decent number of movies with a HD transfer available? It will no doubt be several years from now.
You might as well be telling people not to build any new single-core systems. It's a dead end!
