Officers Raid Home, Take 11-Year-Old To Hospital
NEW CASTLE, Colo. (AP) ? A tactical law enforcement team broke into Tom Shiflett's home and took his 11-year-old son to hospital for court-ordered medical treatment for a minor head injury.

Garfield County's All Hazards Response Team raided the home Friday night, a day after Jon Shiflett fell after grabbing the handle of a moving car. The child was returned to the family at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, hours after the raid.

"Inappropriate is not nearly strong enough a word. It was gross irresponsibility and stupidity," said Ross Talbott, owner of the Apple Tree Mobile Home Park south of New Castle who rents to the Shifletts and who witnessed the raid. "Is this Russia? I don't know what we're coming to when they think your kid needs medical help and they send a SWAT team."

In the end, the injury wasn't as severe as caseworkers from the Garfield County Department of Social Services thought when they went before a judge seeking a search warrant and order for medical treatment.

The doctor recommended fluids, Tylenol and ice to treat the bruises, according to a copy of Jon's patient aftercare instructions.

Tom Shiflett, 62, who said he served as a medic in Vietnam, had told authorities that he had the skill to treat his son.

Garfield County sheriff's spokeswoman Tanny McGinnis said two deputies were first sent to notify Shiflett of a court order for his son's medical treatment and that Shiflett did not comply.

Caseworkers who visited the family Friday reported seeing injuries that including a "huge hematoma" and a sluggish pupil.

Six of Tom and Tina Shiflett's 10 children still live at home.

"In all there was not one shred of evidence found that we had done anything wrong or that Jon had not been properly cared for at home," Tina Shiflett said.

Police state update: We'll take your kids at gunpoint!

This is ridiculous. Every week we hear stories of SWAT teams using inappropriate force against people either mistakenly or wrongly. This is the result of the militarization of our police force, the establishment of thousands of SWAT teams, and the worthless War on Drugs.

Remember when Hillary said people would be compelled to see a doctor at least once a year under her UHC? Guess how you're getting there.... in handcuffs or a body bag.
 
I heard this on the Michael Savage show last night. You socialist, power-hungry, universal healthcare whiners just got a glimpse of what it will be like with the government in control of your health.

I'd also like to know what credentials these nazi socialworkers have they qualify them to make a diagnosis of a "huge hematoma".

I hope this guy sues the bejeezus out of the state and the police department.

The father is 62 years old, still has 6 kids at home and lives (rents?) a trailer?? I think this is what happens when the cost of medical treatment has been allowed to get so outrageous that a father defy's a court order rather then have to pay $500 for medical care that's not needed.

Of course, if this had been a case where the parents were neglecting to care for their child this wouldn't have been an issue.
This was a mistake in judgement. NOT a mistake in the laws protecting minors.

As long as enough people tolerate this, it will continue to happen. Need to have the person in charge of that police department fired, as apparently they're wasting taxpayer money sending SWAT teams for ice patches.

Government must enforce its idea of healthcare, by force. Seems to be related. If you don?t do what they want, you?re abusing your children and thus the police are called in.

Does this happen in other countries with UHC? I certainly have never heard of it happening.

It has more to do with police being turned from public servants into a almost military force with insufficient oversight.
