Force 16x media to burn at 32x?

I just got a new 32/12/40 Lite On drive but only have 16x media. When i burn in nero at 32x it takes a little over 5 mins. per CD which means its only burning at 16x (80/16=5). Is there a way to force the CD-R to burn at 32x? I also noticed that in Nero my buffer status bar jumps around a lot, but dont remember that happening with my old plextor (maybe my HD cant keep up?).

Thanks

same here.. and 12x cd's at 24x

i think all cd media is exactly the same, they just mark on it whatever speed is the fastest at the time they make it.

hmmm, shouldn't a 32x CD-R take about 2.5 minutes to burn (80/32=2.5) ?
Assuming the media isn't the problem, what would prevent me from going faster? Slow HD? I am burning from a 5400 rpm drive.

A lot of times media will be able to burn at speeds higher than what they spec, but you may have just gotten cheap media that can only do 16x... I'd say just follow the spec, or atleast, let hte software test the media and use the max speed it allows/recommends

just because 32x is twice 16x doesn't mean it's twice as fast.
There's a law of diminishing returns (?) that comes into effect I think.

Like cd-rom drives, there's a max speed in which it can read at depending on the location of the data on the cd itself. Because CD-ROM's operate on CAV (constant angular velocity), the outer portions of the disc will read/write faster than the inner portions.

Also, I think your equation 80(mins)/16(x) = 5(mins), 80(mins)/32(x) = 2.5(mins) is incorrect.

It should be something like
1x = 150 KB/sec
32x = 32 * 150 * 10^3 * 8 bits/sec

80 min CD = 700 MB = 700 * 10^6 * 8 bits

divide the two and that is your "theoretical" cd burn time.

I hope this is close to correct... I'm just pulling this outta my @$$ from what I remember from CS and physics a couple of years back :p

lite-on 32x was only 16 seconds faster than the lite-on 24x.

I just picked up the 40X Plextor burner, and I've been using 16X Imations. They've been burning an entire CD in about 2 minutes. My 16X Yamaha burned it in about 5. Not that HUGE of a difference, if you ask me.

I am not sure about this, but the burning method isn't a constant one. It starts at some speed, then revs up after a bit, and then revs up further for the last leg of the process.

I get 3:50-4:00 for full (almost to the brim) CDs at 32x

thanks for the replies. i got some tdk 32x cd's today but its still taking 5:00-5:30 per burn when it should take under 4:00. It's not a major difference but does anyone have any ideas of what might be my bottleneck?

When you use nero to burn.... it detects the speed of the discs you are using... so if the cdr's spec is 16x max... the fastest speed you can burn at is 16x
is there any way to get around it so that you can burn at a faster speed?

I just got a 32/12/40 Lite On this week, and I have been burning 12x and 16x media (Maxell and Verbatim) at 32x with Nero (the bundled version) in less than 4 minutes. No problem at all. I don't remember seeing my buffer bar jumping a lot either. Computer specs are in my sig.
