FORBES: Why Best Buy Is Going Out Of Business...Gradually

It's the only of it's kind in our town, unless something comes in and pushes it out, I don't think it's going anywhere any time soon around here.

They basically put compusa and circuit city out of business in our area, and another small shop opened up recently (I don't remember the name of it) but it only lasted 6 months before it closed it's doors.

There is a regional competitor to Best Buy near where I live... but their return policies suck worse than best buy's... so I avoid them as well.

Walk into one of the company’s retail locations or shop online. And try, really try, not to lose your temper...

The last time I walked into a best buy, I laughed out loud at their outrageous prices.

I was looking for a new video card, so I decided to go to a best buy for a price check. My wife and I were waiting for a restaurant to open at 11am, there was a best buy nearby, so we walked around the store for maybe 30 minutes.

Best buy had an ATI 4850 at $100 more then amazon.

Holy crap, really? $100 more then I can get the item online? I just shook my head and walked away.

Best Buy is not going out of business anytime soon.

Hopefully Frys will build more stores and drive best buy out of business.

I'd love to have a Frys or Microcenter come into my area, I'd even take a PCRichard just to bring in some competition. We have PCRichard closer to the city, but not upstate.

Best buy makes their profits from cables, cases, accessories and services which includes warranties. The big ticket main items are loss leaders

All the money makers are sold cheaper elsewhere and people know it

i was in Best Buy the other day to buy a Logitech wireless mouse. It was on sale for $34.99. I took it to the cashier and showed her Walmart's ad for the same model (different color) for $24.99 and asked if she can price match. She said no, this one is black...it has to be silver. then she checked Walmart online and told me all silver ones were out of stock and she cant price match.

I drive across the street to Walmart and find the silver one and it rings up as $19.99.......$15 cheaper than BB. I hope Walmart puts BB out of business

Microcenter and Frys are far superior if you need B&M. The issue is that they're not nearly as widespread as Best Buy, so that's probably the only thing saving Best Buy for the moment.

I do think Best Buy's years are numbered, however. Their prices are ridiculous, associates are annoying, and the store layouts are generally annoying. I remember a few years ago, you could still find good deals there and it was almost a weekly ritual for me to go there to browse for good deals. Now? I'm lucky if I step in the store twice a year. And yes, Mr. Best Buy CEO, I do occasionally use your store as a showroom for purchases I eventually make on Amazon. Want to stop it? Lower your prices and offer better customer service. Sales tax has zero effect on my purchasing decision when I could still save money buying from Amazon even if they had to charge the same sales tax.

Great analysis -- you're 100% correct. Why pay $40 or $50 for an HDMI cable (LOL, I remember when they sold them for even much more) when you can get them for under $10 on Amazon or Monoprice? Or as another poster pointed out, why pay $100 more for a video card at Best Buy?

They opened a mini pc richard, the store is small and packed with electronics. Seems just like best buy, there is no one around to help you and there prices are retail across the board.

Costco is still my favorite place to purchase big screen tv's, 2-yr warranty, 90-day return policy and there prices are excellent. They even let you play with the remote before buying it, something the big box stores NEVER do. Membership is $55.00

I do have to give credit to the sales dude at my local BB. My CD player busted so I went to buy a new one.

Me: I need a CD player for my home stereo.
Him: Do you want blue ray?
Me: Nope, it just has to play CDs, I don't even care if it plays DVDs.
Him: Okay, let me show you our CD components. Here you go.

He shows me exactly what I asked for: a player that only plays CDs. In the modern era this translates to a high end Yamaha featuring a laser tuned through a fragment of the Arkenstone that Yamaha engineers stole from Thorin's breast. Price was upwards of $400.

Me: Thank you. We'll look around some more.

A few minutes later we found the DVD players that also played CDs, had RCA jacks, and cost $36. I give the salesman credit for trying.

The only problem with using a DVD player with a stereo is that the player assumes it is hooked to a TV set and anything past play/stop/pause/eject relies on an on-screen menu we can't see.

Best Buy will probably stay in business for a while cause most people still use it quite a bit. I know most of my gf's family still use it for pretty much all their needs, cause they just don't do a whole lot of online shopping, and Best Buy is the most popular name. A lot of people just want their stuff now. Not to mention people like to browse and see stuff. So they get a lot of impulse buys.

Never underestimate the power of instant gratification.

I have no problems shopping at BB, they are close and usually have what I need. But, unlike most people, I'm going into the store as an informed buyer, knowing more or less what I'm looking for and what it should cost.

As long as investors keep buying BB stock, the company will stay in business.

When sales keep declining and their stock is downgraded, then I look for the company to be in trouble.

But then again, just pay off a rating company to keep giving the company high marks.

That's the whole problem- you have to say "no" about 6 times to make a simple purchase there. Everything is wrapped in an up-sell. It's the only store I feel I have to accompany my mother to so she doesn't end up spending $300 more on stuff she doesn't need.

I use to be weekly customer at Best Buy spending and buying at an alarming rate. I use to love going to Best Buy to browse, checking their sale brochures and making my weekly trip to buy things needed and not needed. Not so anymore. I’ve had just too many problems with Best Buy.
1) Returns are always a problem. Compared to Costco, which takes back most everything.
2) Their sales people are pushing what they make big commissions on, which is rarely what I want. Usually they don't even know what they are talking about.
3) Their product line is not up to date technically. It took quite some time for them to get SSD drives in, and when they did, they only carried a few.
4) I don’t like the security guard (door Nazi) at the exit door looking me over like I stole something.
5) I once had a problem where they sold me used software by rewrapping it in cellophane and selling it as new. Finally the manager admitted it was a return.
6) Microcenter has a much better selection of the necessary accessories.
7) I’m tired of the sales checker asking me if I want an extended warranty
8) Their rebate program is always difficult and seems like designed to fault the customer. I remember once receiving a card from the rebate company telling me that they can’t honor my rebate because Kansas is not part of the continental United States. I brought that card and product back to Best Buy demanding a refund or immediate rebate. They gave me the rebate.
9) I’ve had too many times that Best Buy would not honor their sales price or conveniently be out of that sale product. Even on the Black Friday, how many times have they had like 6 or 7 of a sale product? Is that reasonable or trickery?
10) Type into Google ‘Best Buy Sucks’ and it shows over 17 million hits.

Overall, I feel like a gerbil running through a maze in their store. Their salespeople (teenagers) appear to have fake smiles and attitudes that are very transparent. I do my shopping now on the Internet, Microcenter, or Nebraska Furniture Mart. I hope they go out of business soon so that other and better merchandisers can take their share of the business.

Bb has some of he worst deals. They are getting destroyed by amazon and other better companies. Best buy has a 560ti for like 250 dollars

They're not paying enough obviously. They've only got a B- rating after a disappointing earnings report, and they've lost about 1/3 of their stock value since July.

What's this "CD" thing you're talking about? Is that like a record? :sneaky:
