It makes good business sense since INtel has no real answer to the opteron line currently...It is just getting hammered in the performance per watt category...

I imagine this will likely only be in their server models and not desktop or laptops...

Also wonder how much Dell is pissed Intel has collaborated with Apple...

Good points.

I question AMD's ability to keep up with the demand to produce such a large quantity of chips, though; and even if they can, will anything be sacrificed (i.e. quality, availability to the other OEMs, online vendors, the general non-Dell consumers)?

Times are changing for sure. Only the future will tell how Intel and AMD fair in this new marketplace.

Dell should offer both in my opinion but Intel would throw a fit. And I dont think AMD could produce the millions of cpus needed for them to switch to AMD only. So best case we could see amd as an option and most likely only in servers.

As Duvie said, if Dell are buying anything it'll be OPteron for servers as that's where AMD is dominating and Dell losing marketshare, while volumes are low (enough for AMD to supply Dell's volumes) while profits are high and so is worth re-tooling for them. Purely economic decision - although why expect anything else.

On the Apple side of things as before - this is an economic decision not to get back at Intel for selling chips to Apple. Being fair Apply is not Dell's competitor in the short term or even really in the medium term as they target different markets for the most part. ie Dell is cheapest, best value, functional while Apple is all about style, design and ease of use which they charge more for. Where there might be a cross-over is that people want a computer that 'just works' and if Apple can provide that due to better OS (importantly less of the nasties trojans etc) then many people might decide the buy Apple and perhaps spend a bit more over getting a Dell.

I don't know. This sounds like a good theory, but is Apple really a threat?

Let's see, the looks of an Apple, the ability to dual-boot, and the ability to run Windows - yeah, I'd say they are now a threat.

Remember this, as PCs drop to the $200-$300 range and with the current generation of PC purchasers recalling that they've spent up to $2000-$3000 on computers then they REALLY won't mind spending $1000 on an Apple versus $300 on a PC. To them it's still a deal because they're getting a heck of a lot of computer for $1000 and they'll rationalize that it is a great deal compared to when they spent $2000 on one.
I'm not saying it is right but psychologists get paid big money on figuring this stuff out. Now when the younger generation becomes the major purchaser and they've grown up spending $500-$800 per PC then they'll be less likely to buy the higher end machines, unless of course prices keep dropping which they will.
Anyhow, I know many people that WANT to spend $600 on a PC because they view the $300 PCs too "cheap".
If Apple can hit the $750-$800 price WITH a nice LCD then Dell should be afraid.

I think the new fab they just opened recently will really help with demand. It's probably the reason that Dell decided it was safe to finally go with AMD.

Since Dell does a lot of low-end single-processor server business, I wonder if AMD designed the s939 Opertons for mainly them to use in the servers that typically get P4s now? I've always figured that the Opteron would be AMD's way into Dell. They are just such awesome processors compared to the Xeons when it comes to server tasks that you just can't sell servers nowadays and not offer an Opteron option.

It's also possible that you might see the FX chips in the XPS series. Those machines are high-cost and low-volume just like servers, so AMD should have no trouble keeping those chips flowing.

They almost assuredly will use a combination of Nforce and AMD chipsets until the Horus chipset is released...
