I got my job through a friend. He knew someone who was a manager for a motherboard manufacturer, and I became their tech support. School didn't help any, it was the connections which did. That was in 1996, so Anandtech didn't help. I did find Anandtech while I was there though, in 1998.

I got to fly all over the country, went to Comdex twice in its heyday (and chilled in the Voodoo lounge and played with the Voodoo2 before it was released, it was an amazing experience working for a computer company back in the late 90's. After that I worked for IBM, then Bristol Myers Squibb, then Johnson&Johnson, then Siemens.

MS in engineering. First job out of grad school assigned to me by the Air Force. While there, I got picked for a competetively awarded technical internship. Got out of the Air Force and landed a job from a listing found online somewhere - largely on the strength of my publications during that internship and a TS clearance. That company got bought out a few years later and the work environment went downhill. Met a guy I used to work with at the company I did that internship with while at a trade show. They had a local opening, I interviewed and got it.

Pay is very good for an area with an average cost of living. And yea, I guess you could say the college degree helped - you won't even get considered for the positions I've held without at least a B.S.
