For those with Outlook & SETI Conflicts

I was using SETIDRIVER with the SETI CLI and experienced problems with Outlook slowing down to the point that I had to shutdown SETIDRIVER in order to use Outlook. Outlook would slow down during the synchronization & Send/Receive process.

I also had problems running Compaq Insight Manager hanging during startup, or responding very slowly with SETIDRIVER running.

However, I recently stopped using SETIDRIVER, and went with a Service Install using Flexinstaller to install the SETI CLI, as we are now forcing PCs to log off the network at night, and I was finding PCs logged off and not running SETI in the morning.

The service install has apparently fixed my conflict problem with Outlook and Compaq Insight Manager. In fact when I opened up Insight Manager, it opened so fast I had to double check to make sure SETI was running, and sure enough STCLI was running at 98% CPU.

It must have something to do with Applications having precedence over background services, freeing up enough cycles for Outlook and Insight Manager to run properly. I expect I will see slightly slower SETI averages though.

Thought I would pass that on. :D

Outlook is a perplexing program. Out of all the machines I have running win2k/outlook/seti driver only ONE has this slow down issue. That one happens to be my main PC at home. At work we use and exchange server and I don't see the problem. At home I use SMTP/POP services and it lags like hell.

Are you running it as a service at home? If not, try installing it as a service and see if the problem frees up. I believe it has to do with the way Outlook processes PST and OST files as part of the send/receive nad synch process. Outlook would work fine until it tried to do an auto send/receive, then it would slow way down to the point of acting like it was locked up until I killed SETIDRIVER, then it would complete the send/receive and everything would be fine.

This way, the send/receive completes very quickly and Outlook doesn't slow down. I use SETIQ to monitor the clients, so running it as a service isn't a problem for me.

The SETI CLi as a whole also seems to have problems with AVG (the free antivirus suite). I can no longer have it start on boot with either the flexinstaller or seti driver. I have to boot, start a program (like IE), close the program, and then start seti driver. If I just start seti driver right off then the system slows down to almost a halt. It take 30 sec or more to open even basic things like the start bar. The only solution is to close seti driver again.

Does anyone know of a fix for this? Does this happen under XP as well as 2000 (what I'm on)?

Thanks,
Swan

I've run into the SETI pause under Win2K/Outlook2K in both POP and Exchange Email. I've also got the offline folders disabled. Another member (IJump) suggested that and I thought clearing offline folders might've solved it but I've had pauses yesterday and today. :(

Oh, I run SETI as a service with an install package but it's not the Flex Installer. I don't use the F.I. because it doesn't have a simple uninstall. :(

I also experienced this problem to the point where it took up to 5 minutes for the computer to boot. I was using and older version of this software called AVP Pro. It forced me to switch to Norton Antivirus.

I'm using the free version of AVG at home, with SETIDRIVER installed as a service. I noticed the problem of slowdown when I do a restart and first logon. I found that if I wait a few minutes to logon, things settle down and I don't have the slowdown problem.

I switched to AVG from Norton and like it a lot. :)

Thanks for the responses to my questions. Unfortunately, I'm too cheap to switch to McAffe or Norton:eek: I'll just go on manually starting it.

I got Norton Antivirus 2002 at a computer show about 8 months ago for $10 so cost shouldn't be a big problem unless you need several copies.

Baldy, can you still get antivirus file updates from Symantec for free? McAfee started requiring a subscription, I thought Symantec was going that route as well.

Norton is free for the first year and then you have to pay. However, if after the year you uninstall and then reinstall it will start your year over.;)

Yep. Unless you buy the OEM NAV only version, then you get 90 days (most versions, but there is a one year version too). My distributor has NAV2002 for $12 and Norton System Works (includes NAV) for $16. With system works you get one year of updates and ALL of the norton utilites. I was LMAO....$4 well spent!!!

Ray - I don't want to run it as a service because I'm a gamer. It's much easier for me to right click the icon>exit than to shut down the service for gaming. It's only a minor annoyance, I only check my outlook mail 2-3 times a night...I just close driver then.

On a side note.... I just installed a P4 2.0a to replace my old 1.8a. I was able to take it to 132 fsb (fastest for my mobo) which is 2640 MHz. OMG PEOPLE....SETI FLIES on my rig now, my avg wu time for 45 wu's it 2:40!!!

RaySun2Be, do you mind divulging how you're setting the PC's to log off at night? As you may recall, I was trying to do this by semi-roundabout means, but it isn't always working for me :(
