I use a small pair of diagonal cutters. Like this.

AFA the "how to snip w/o damaging wires" goes, that's all in the experience, my friend. :) I know just how much pressure I can/have to apply in order to prevent the cutter from "slipping off" the cable tie and cutting the wire.

FWIW, I use wire ties extensively on every box I build. They are the key to good case temps, which directly affects CPU temps.

where's a good place to get those cable tie things? I normally just use a scissor or whatever sharp object is on hand.

best is to get a pair of diagonal cutters yes, if you need to do this frequently you can find cutters specialised for this stuff who have a very thin side, so that it can fit between the cables and the cable tie, but that's only if you'd really do this often, otherwise it's best to just get a cutter, and put it's tops between two cables when you cut the cable tie, that way you cannot slip, it's hard to draw an ascii art image of it, but I hope u get the idea.

Anonemous, I usually get them at Home Depot. Cheap and lots of colors.

FYI, in anwer to the thread question, I use a diagonal cutter to remove them. Use the very tip of the cutter and you won't damage the wire.

I have used these ties as luggage locks when travelling since9/11. TSA inspectors can cut them if necessary and do their job. I always have a bag of spares. Any electronics supply store has them - also luggage/travel stores now often have them. For removal, I carry a nail clipper with the file removed in my laptop case. Easy to clip the ties when necessary.

For tying up internal wires to make a neater harness, you can also use and reuse plastic twist ties.
