For those who saw Star Wars: ATOC in a digital theater, what didya think?

I found the quality to be bad ass. 🙂

I went to the AMC Van Ness in San Fran. today. The picture appeared sharper and more vibrant. I'll definitely have to check it out at a regular theater to really compare the difference.

yeah... i saw the movie in both digital and poopy... hehe... the digital was way sharper imho.. not the backgrounds necessarily, but the people... and no screen fuzz 😀

Saw it in Elizabeth NJ...

It looked like a big dvd to me. Nothing really special, but it only cost me $5 so I don't mind.

I saw it on both, the charactors in some scene's were darker and harder to see, quality was definantly better though.

I saw it in Plano at the Cinemark Legacy. Awesome picture, great colors and a very sharp picture.

I am going to see it on digital this sunday with some friends. I already seen it on film so now I can compare 🙂

Harkins at arrowhead

Robert Ebert did a minute or two discussing this topic last week on his TV show. He noted that the image appeared sharper and crisper. He had seen it the week before off a reel and had mentioned it was somewhat fuzzy at some points. Not fuzzy in that you notice it more than other movies, but just not real sharp. Then, they invited him back and showed in Digital in the same theatre he watched the reel version. He said he sat in just about the same seats as well. Conclusion was that the digital did clear much of what he thought was slightly fuzzy. He recommended catching the digital version but either was good.

Just thought I'd mention that. He was commenting on quality only, the actual movie quality was not part of the discussion.

I saw it in Richmond, BC, Canada

I haighly recommend it 😀 Especially when it costs the same as going to a regular screening 🙂

Cheers,
Aquaman

Same here at the AMC Santa Monica 7.

I wish now that I had seen the film version the first night so that I could compare a pristine print version to the digital.

By now the prints are thrashed from so many showings.

I dont even think theres a digital theatre anywhere near here...and whats the difference between digital and regular??

I'm going to see it in the Cinerama in Seattle to se it in all it's glory. I already saw it stripped down and I liked it so I'm sure it will be that much better.

I saw it at the Star in Southfield, MI yesterday. The quality was INCREDIBLE! Everything was so clear, bright, no hair-scratches-crap running through it all the time...

If you haven't seen it digital, you have to!!

By the numbers:

<<Film>>
Pixels: 8 million
Framerate: 24 (shutter open twice for 48 like)
compression: none
cons: scratches in the film, 16 year old running $30,000 projector, lower contrast ratio, needs good optics to resolve max resolution.

<<Digital>>
Pixels: 2 million
framerate: 24 (maybe some line doubling to improve the flicker)
compression: 40:1
cons: less resolution, cost $150,000 will be obsolete next week,

Where do you ge a film resolution of 8 million pixels?😕 Film is entirely analog as a picture, so you can't just count the pixels.

yes, but you can compare quality😛 films quality depends on its grain size and sensitivity. hell i've read qoutes up to 15mil mpix for some camera film(not movie camera)

i saw pixels🙁 mostly the closeups of cg aliens looked more detailed, problably because a generation wasn't lost through transfer, but every other scene you could see the digital pixel grid in bright areas, high contrast areas, or on large unmoving objects, which was very very annoying. that scene in the grass definetly looked ugly😛 thought it would improve some from the film since it was first gen, seems the camera just didn't have the res for it😛 eye gets drawn to regular patterns like that, especially obvious during bright scenes. ah well, hopefully their next gen increases res a bit. no point in upgrading when there are easily seen digital artifacts.. especially for that price. digital production systems need to increase in resolution(i've heard atoc is 1440x880) 2-3x atleast before this system can be called better then film😛

i suppose i could have sat in the rear 3rd of the theater to blur things together.. but that kinda defeats the point of a "superior" format😛 seeing normal film projected correctly is a beautful thing...digitals still not there.

and yes its not fair to compare dig with film with this film.. because the film version is limited by the digital cameras lowly resolution😛 hardly fair.

btw i saw it at the sf metreon😉
