When and how did you being losing it?

And do you work in computer professionally?

<--- My interest in computer lasted 20 years. Got sick and tired of them when I was about 28.

My professional interest in them helps pay my bills.

When: Recently
How: Using them constantly
Work: I use a computer at work, but I don't maintain them or anything.
Why: They're just not that interesting and they're too expensive.

i started losing interest in them after i graduated from college. now it's just a tool for me and my motto is "if it can boot windows under 2 minutes don't upgrade it"

hell i'm still using Win2k on a 1700+ with a GF3 Ti500.

If by interest you mean 'tinkering with the HW,' then I would say about two years ago. The average PC is powerful to do most anything nowadays--no need to stay cutting edge anymore. Also, I hate to drop a few hundred annually on upgrades.

BTW, I don't work on computers, just with computers.

I lost interest about ohhh...6 years ago when I started having to be responsible for them 24/7.

When a server blows up on the other side of the country and you have to fly out on 2 hours notice and work 48 hours straight getting it running with the owners of the company calling you every 45 minutes asking the status....

You really don't want to go home and fsck around with your home computer.

when my job depended on my knowledge of them. When I came home, the LAST thing I wanted to do was sit on my pc.

I've since got a different position (out of it, but pc related...) and my interested is going more towards pc's again... yay

College. I still know how to build a computer and all that jazz, but my computer is 4 years old and I don't plan on getting a new one anytime soon.

I'm no less interested in my computer, than I am in my wrenches, charcoal grill or my old truck. As long as they get the job done, I'm happy.

When I quit trying to make the PC a cutting edge gaming platform my hours of tinkering came to an end. I quit dicking around with my car(s) 25 years ago, and the PCs about 4 years ago. Now they're simply tools, as they should be.

I was about 17. I'm not going into computers, but I work in a computer lab in college. It's pretty EZ.

I see two reasons why I am less interested in comptuers than the used to be:

1) Back in the day, tinkering with your comptuer to boost it from 300mhz to 450mhz made a HUGE difference in what you could do with it. Today, the jump from a 2.0 ghz A64 to a 2.5 ghz A64 just doesn't feel or seem as impressive or necessary.. thus, it is less impt to tinker with it constantly.

2) I have realized that there is a sort of return on investment type of situations with computers.. I can spend a few hours week learning about them and tinkering with them.. but spending 20 hours a week doesn't give me *that* much more speed/knowledge etc.

Pretty much got sick of them when I joined the Army. I did NOT want to be known as the "computer guy". I still help some people with problems, but make no claims on being any sort of expert.

I don't upgrade as nearly much, trying to save $$ for the more important things in life. The only reason I have a 64 system is that my last motherboard had bad capacitors and I just built a simple solid 64 3000.

yep, when you have to take care of them as a job they really lose their appeal, imo.

As soon as I built my current computer, just really had no need to stay up to date on hardware. Things are always changing so fast and any hardware you buy is worth next to nothing maybe only 6 months down the road.

I've realized I don't care about the hardware as much as I thought I may have at one time because I really don't have any need to, right now anyway.

Yeah, since I don't play games I haven't felt the need to upgrade my computer much at all, which is about 2 years old now.

I used to love Macs. For a while I was a Mac fan boy. I also loved PC's.

Now I dont give a damn about them. I wont spend anymore money on computers. I'd prefer to buy guitar amps, etc. I'm not going to have a career with computers.

I too gave up gaming!!! Does that count?

I realize, if you don't game, a computer can last you 4-6 years.

I built my computer in May 04' (see specs below in Skynet), and I recently gave up gaming.

Now I realize that my rig is COMPLETE overkill.

Before I gave up gaming, I was considering so many upgrades like GFX card for one thing, and a new moniter. That woulda put me bout 600-700 dollars in the hole.

Meh...I've lost interest by working with them all the damn time. I manage a computer repair shop so I'm always fixing them, etc.

I do still like working on laptops and printers though as I like to take things apart and such and well...not much to take apart on a desktop. Laptops/printers are all quite different from each other for the most part.

I guess I lost my interest in gaming first (sold my game PC this year)...and I'm just getting tired of my job...partly because I'm exploring my photography a lot more and I've been shooting weddings and landscapes and portaits and I really enjoy it. It does involve using Photoshop on a computer and all but eh...there's other things to do in this world than sit in front of a computer.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. When my home computer fvcks up I get really, really pissed. After fixing computer fvckups all day long, the last thing I want to do when I get home is fix a fvcked up computer.

I haven't quite given up on gaming (usually breeze through a couple of titles during summer) but I have given up being on the cutting edge. The only thing that I wasn't happy about in my previous system (eMachines m6805) is the Radeon 9600. Other than that, it was plenty to do work on.
