Ah, thank you, this will make for excellent material for convincing my dad as to why widescreen is better.

how? widescreen cuts off the top and bottom of the film, and pan and scan cuts off the sides... its just what youd rather see... a wider picture or taller...

actually if you compare the images on that page, pan and scan cuts the image off horizontally, but is a taller image... in the same respect, widescreen cuts off the top and bottom and is a wider picture...

no it doesn't. nothing gets cut off. The movie was cropped to fit on a movie screen. Movie screens and TV are of different aspect ratios. In order to fit the WHOLE shot onto a TV screen it has to be shown with those "black bars" Fullscreen movies are the ones that lose more info. Pan and scan means that they will take the frame and "pan" across the frame to get to the other end of the frame to show you what was there. That doesn't happen with a widescreen version of the movie.

Just turn off the lights and you don't even see the black bars. I'd rather see the full frame as it was intended by the director instead of the Pan and Scan image.

Of course, if I didn't have a 36" direct view set, I might change my mind because the actors images get quite small with widescreen on a standard set.

OTOH.. I hate it when dvd's only come in widescreen. Especially movies like "Dude, where's my car", where it doesn't really matter what I'm missing on the sides of the frame. I'd rather have Pan and Scan or at least a choice in this instance.

cropped for the theater and generally shot for both tv and widescreen ratios. guess what they use it for? yes romance movies and cr@ppy dramas. its only 1.66:1... or the not so wide screen wide screen.

all they did was squeeze the picture to make it taller, it added nothing.

for example, in one of the images, look at where the elfs hair is cut off... in the pan &scan you see more of his head... in the on with the ring laying on the snow, you see farther down, and more of the sky with the pan & scan... by the way, im not saying that one is better than the other, i just noticed something and am bringing it to the attention...

Who gives a sh!t? The importance isn't what you can see, but what the goddamn director intended you to see. When thye made the film, they framed it for 2.35:1, not 1.33:1....Andrew Lesnie didn't win an Oscar for cinematography for how he framed his shots in pan & scan.

Please, beast...don't even think about defending pan and scan at all :disgust:

Roger That Kami,

My wife preferred Pan & Scan, before she realized what Widescreen gives.

Now we're just looking for a larger screen 🙂

Widescreen (AKA Original Aspect Ratio) all the way! fullscreen is for idiots who don't know that there are better alternatives available.
