ok I now reveal myself as uber-geek: the Star Trek RPG, which I played quite a bit as a kid, explained it by saying the Klingons had several sub-species. There were human-Klingons, Romulan-Klingons, and "true" Klingons. The true ones got all the hot chicks and good jobs.

The big question: will this devolve into a flamewar even though the OP was of a strictly humorous nature? [NatureDocumentaryVoiceOver] "Let's sit back and watch the wild nerds interact and determine who the e-Alpha-Male really is, shall we?" [/NatureDocumentaryVoiceOver]

Sex in the 9th month!

Worf once claimed Klingon sex with a human female would be a threat to her life due to its violent nature. Sorry, dont remember the episode.

That's only the klingons that made it into the movies... They had cosmetic surgery to enhance their looks, akin to Britney's numerous boob jobs.

And Worf's a bad enough dude that you should listen, whether or not you're still curious. ;)

Well, if humans could evolve out of pond scum in only 5 millions years then the Klingons evolving so radically in a couple hundred years is very believable. ;)

My theory is that the Klingons were seperated into several social castes, and the "smooth-heads" had dominion during the first years of Kirk's voyage. The "ridge-heads" were the hunter/warrior caste that you just don't see in the old episodes. Sometime between the classic episodes and the first motion picture, possibly started by the tribble famine, the warrior caste overthrew and wiped out the "flat-heads" (perhaps a royal line?). Since the remaining species had a much more punctuated ridged head, future generations developed more prominent ridges.

I think this theory can be backed up by the fact that much of Klingon technology couldn't have been developed by such a brutal species, so at some point in their lineage there had to be scientists and a government that cared enough to progress technologically.

That DS9 Tribble episode was one of the very few episodes I did like. I thought it was funny as hell.

Then how do the Klingons from Enterprise fit into that theory?

I was going to ask the same thing... The real world answer is effects budgets. The Star Trek answer doesn't exist obviously since they fscked up Enterprise.

the earlier ones were trying to pass.

the well-known "Klingon Pride" movement came about later.
