For those that cut the grass what do you use...?

i dont have a lawn, but used a lexmark lazer Z HP 52 inch with 27 hp kohler engine to mow 3 acers at my parents. mows grass and 9 mph!

A lexmark...? Thought they made printers...😀 Think you mean Exmark, my company is a dealer for them and considered one but I got the Toro financed interest free and at a good price...

BTW I just cut my front and back yards with it and what used to take about 50-55min with my Cub Cadet LT1042 lawn tractor only took 25min with the Toro Titan... Lawn looks alot better too...

I have a ~10 year old Craftsman 48" lawn tractor that sucks royal balls. I hate that thing with a passion but it's so expensive to replace. The engine has been rock solid but just about everything else has broken down. It needs a new transmission and isn't worth fixing so I'm going to drive it into the ground.

LOL... Funny I had a guy next door the other day get pissed at his trimmer and tossed it over the fence into my yard... I just left it there for a while but later that evening he came over asking if he could get it and I offered to look at it... All it needed was a new spark plug...😛

For a trimmer I have this...

http://www.stihlusa.com/multitask/KM90R.html

Its a 4 stroke unit and what I love about the most is 2 pulls on the starter cord and its running... I changed the trimmer head to one of those that uses the pre-cut snap in lines which seem to work great...

My neighbors think my trimmer has wings because they always see it flying through the air. 😎

we are without a mower at the moment, our 16 year old rider tossed the rod the other day. <goes back to ads looking for a mower>

We have a fairly wild yard that's hilly, inaccessible to a riding mower in some areas, partially wooded, etc. Overall, it's 6.5 acres with about ~3 acres being forest.

I have an 80s or 90s John Deere riding mower with a hydrostatic transmission. No idea what the deck size is, engine type / HP / etc., but it cuts very well.

To supplement that, we recently bought a 22" Craftsman self-propelled walk-behind mower with a Honda engine. It replaced our 3-4 year old 22" Craftsman self-propelled with a Briggs & Stratton engine and a busted gearbox. The new one is nice, but the older one did cut better (except you had to drag it backwards D🙂

We also recently bought a 29cc 4-stroke Craftsman straight-shaft trimmer. It's decent, but tall, thick grass tends to get bound up just above the cutting head and needs to be cleaned regularly. :|

Finally, we have a DR Field & Brush trimmer, basically a weed whacker on wheels. It does a pretty good job at knocking down grass that's way overgrown (think two feet high) and very small undergrowth, but it tends to throw line regularly.

Overall, it works out pretty well. None of the pieces of equipment are perfect, but they all compliment each other pretty well.

I run an old Toro push mower with a 2 cycle engine. Yes, a 2 cycle. Yay for not having to do messy oil changes lol 😀 And it seems pretty fuel efficient, I bought 2 gallons of gas at the beginning of spring and I haven't used it all yet.

Only problem is the carb leaks, so until I fix that I have to tip it up so the fuel tank doesn't empty out all over the shed floor. I really need to fix that :hmm:

How often do you guys water your lawns? I was surprised when I moved to Hawaii. Everybody here waters nightly. In Texas people water 2x or 3x a week...

Cheapo briggs & strat died this year but served its purpose for the price I paid, and upgraded to a self-propelled Toro with Honda motor. Is much, much nicer!

yes exmark. whoops.

Never. If it turns a bit brownish and stops growing as fast, great, that's less time I have to spend cutting it 😀

Not like I really have a "lawn" anyway. It is mostly weeds of some sort. And since I rent and am definitely not a landscaper, I don't care enough to tear it all up and plant a nice lawn. I just keep it reasonably cut and leave it at that.

I use a Craftsman lawnmower I bought from my neighbor. It was only a year old when I bought it and it is a total piece of crap and a royal pain in the ass just to get started.

Craftsman, starts on the 15th pull...if it starts at all.

used to have a crummy honda 20 inch that came with the house i rent.
3 summers ago my landladies daughter brought her horse here as she could not afford to board it any more and she was going out of state to school. I havent touched a lawnmower since then. dont need to fertilize anymore either.
feed the horse hay once a day and she spends the rest of the time mowing the lawn.

Tell me about it...:'( We just recently had enough rain to really green things up but was around Austin last week and man talk about dry... Is it that bad over in Houston your just 2 hours from me...?

It's ok because we're in a different water authority than the city of houston so we aren't on water restrictions . . . yet. But I just went to Dallas for Quakecon and it was just brown the entire way up 45.

I have a Sears/Craftsman 22" mower with a 6.5hp Briggs and Stratton Engine. It isn't self-propelled, but it does have the oversize back wheels which makes it easy.

The other belongs to my stepdad, who uses a '49 Ford Jubilee tractor with grooming mower attachment to get the areas not immediately around the house.

1990s John Deere LX176 - 36" deck - 14hp Kawasaki engine
Its main oil sump gasket is bad. I need to completely disassemble the engine to replace it.
I keep mowing with it and have to put oil in almost every time I mow. (3 acres)

I am going to replace it this winter. If things go bad, I am getting a new zero turn mower.
I am leaning towards a 48 or 54" Bobcat. They have 5 year warranty on all parts if used for residential use and are well liked from all the people I talk to.

I used to use a Ariens Fairway 27" riding mower that had a gigantic 4 HP Tecumseh engine. I built it out of 2 mowers that both had different broken parts. My neighbor (who was into mowers, bikes and such) thought it was a joke when I asked hm if he wanted to use it for his yard. He said he wouldn't use it until it would do a wheelie.

So I shaved the head, and replaced the clutch spring with a spring that was about 10 times as strong. I shaved the head so much, it would only run on a 50/50 gasohol mixture, and I started it with propane. Even with the coolest plug, it would melt the electrode in 2 or 3 hours. Then, I told my neighbor that it would do a wheelie. He didn't believe me, put it in 4th and let go of the clutch. It promptly flipped over backwards and broke the seat. That was hilarious. That engine took so much abuse it wasn't even funny. It was still running great about 5 years later when I gave it away to a neighborhood kid and 'upgraded' to a 16.5 HP MTD. When I moved to a townhouse, I gave the MTD aaway to my dad. That one has quite a few 'enhancements' done to it as well, though not as extreeme as the Ariens. I miss that lawn mower 🙁

Grass? What grass? lol

When we move to Portland I'll be in the market, but I'm sure it will be some free or nearly free riding lawnmower that I'll have to overhaul.

And that's fine by me.
