Arkitech, please tape rap out of the title. You did not list rap, you listed hip hop. It is awful music.

I listen to rap, and I am embarrased to say that you claim it and use it in the same category as Jurassic 5, Common, and all those similar styles. It is awful.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say: Are you saying J5 and Common are awful or are you tring to make some other point? 😕

He's just saying that he doesn't think most of the ones you listed qualify as "RAP", maybe? I dunno, what he was saying seemed pretty clear to me.

And btw, Tupac (I would say that's rap) and The Roots (I'd say that's hip hop) are my favorite artists that have been listed in this thread. I'm giving some other stuff a shot though, cause I like some variety.

Listen to "A Day at the Races" by Jurassic 5 and then tell me it's not rap.

Nice to see someone likes some halfway decent hip-hop/rap. I myself would love to go back to the days of old-school stuff, before it was so damn commercial and all about:
smoking pot/putting a cap in someone's as*/insert random deragatory term for a woman/etc. etc. I'd love to see the likes of people like Eminem, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, etc. etc. fall off the face of the earth. They absolutely have no talent what so ever, imho, and only make money trying to be as offensive as they can with their lyrics and shocking young stupid kids who think that it's so neat and taboo.

As for myself these are my favorite rap/hip-hop albums/artists:

Public Enemy: It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back/ Fear Of A Black Planet: Absolutely great music that talks about how they viewed black society of the present and the past. I'm white and I appreciate it. Chuck D. has to be one of the brightest people out there.
De La Soul: Random Albums: They just made alot of great and fun music to listen to.
Tribe Called Quest: All but the two latter albums: Q-Tip has a great style to him and asolutely brillianty lyricaly.

And there's other, but I'm too tired to think of any right now.

I think that's being a bit too harsh. I think Eminem has tremendous talent. 50Cent and Jay-Z do too, however, they have put themselves in a position to sell more records if they rap a certain way and that's what they choose to do. More power to anybody who can make themselves financially successful. I do prefer the underground more however, because the music is not diluted and geared to sell records but rather for creativity, the fans, and for the passion of hip-hop/rap, whatever the fvck you want to call it, it's all love. To each his own.

You think Eminem has tremendous talent? How is that? Because he comes up with creative ways to say 'gee, my mom and wife is a whore', or 'I killed my wife in such and such a way'. And don't give me 'oh it's his rhyming style'. There's plenty of people that could come up with just as offensive lyrics and make them rhyme. He's nothing but a cancer in society, and in all reality, it's pretty pathetic people buy his crap just to fuel his fire to become even a bigger idiot. I'm sorry, but to me, there's no talent or skill involved in being a complete little as*hole. Maybe I'm wrong. but that's my opinion.

You ever rap before? You ever try to come up with lyrics to a song and then have them flow over a beat? The shyt ain't easy, it takes talent. Writing lyrics, cadence, flow, all take talent, no matter how offensive or vulgar it may seem. The fact that it is offensive and vulgar should not discredit the fact that rapping well takes more skill than any common person can do. I'd like to hear you rap acapella and see if you can do it, since you claim that there's plenty of people who can take those lyrics and make them rhyme. Rhyming is not the only element of rap, you forget about wordplay, delivery, breath control. I've been a fan of Eminem since his Scribble Jam/Rap Olympics days, he's taken his style to a whole 'nother level where he can flip it however he wants to. And forget about what he does in society, that has nothing to do with the possession of talent.

i recommend deltron 3030 for those who hate the typical mainstream rap. it features del from hieroglyphics (he also has a solo album out called "both sides of the brain") and is an excellent album with intelligent lyrics and interesting background beats, some even verging on trippy. nothing like getting stoned, putting your headphones on, and letting this one play.

standout tracks include: 3030, mastermind, virus, and memory loss. do yourself a favor and download some songs from this album or better yet, buy it because it's worth every penny.

I honestly never understood why this album got any airplay, but their later collaboration Gorillaz got airplay. Deltron was 10x the album Gorillaz was. The only songs I ever heard off the album on the radio were 3030 and positive contact. On a rock station no less.

It's funny that only rock stations around here play Jurassic 5 or songs off the Roots new CD yet I hear 50 cent every 15 minutes on the hip hop stations.

I could'nt agree more, it amuses me when I see people dismiss rap as something anyone can do. The minute I hear someone make that statement that automatically lets me know that they don't have a clue. But on the flip side of the coin its a shame so many artists dumb down their music to the point where the average joe believes they can rap.

its actually the other way around, hiphop for the most part died in the 90s and now most of these artists today just rap about their clothes, money or criminal exploits.

Hiphop defines the culture and the lifestyle, anyone can call themselves a rapper but not every rapper embraces hiphop. I think krs-one summed it up best "rap is something you do, hiphop is something you live".

Afu Ra - Whirlwind Through Cities. dont know the name of the album as i never had a chance to pick it up, but i like this track a lot. i used to be in to hip hop back in the day but i stopped listening. i want to get back in the undergroudn but i dont know where to start, nor do i have the funds to buy cds =/

Tribe Called Quest and The Roots are awesome groups. I personally don't like anything Lauryn Hill, but I love Wyclef.

Another good hip-hop group that I've been very impressed with is Nappy Roots. They have the "dirty south" sound to them, and they actually sing, which you don't hear much in "mainstream" rap.

thanks arkitech, also thanks for heading up this post, i am a music junkie also.

hip-hop is undeniably music.
