friend gets the gps option every time he goes somewhere and rents a car. For the life of me, I can't imagine it being much more useful than printing a map with directions if you're just using it locally.

I don't have it, but 99% of the time when I drive, I'm driving to a place I've been to before, and I already know how to get there. Navigation in the car isn't going to help find someplace if I already know where it is.

I have it, and love it. I do go out of town a lot, so it does come in pretty handy. But for someone that doesn't travel a whole lot, I couldn't see it being that useful.

I have it. I got it because I'm horrible with directions plus in my car it just looks cool!

I have it with an iPAQ and TomTom Navigator 3, and I use it every single day, 8 hours straight. I work in the South of the UK :)|) and I very rarely go to the same place twice.

I'd be dead in the water without it.

I got a GPS reciever for my laptop and love it. I dont use it very much because I dont go to new places very much. I like not having to think ahead and print out directions, that and if there is construction/acident I can turn off my route and GPS will update accordingly.

I use mine all the time. I do a lot of house calls though. It rocks- a hawt woman with an english accent comes on over the stereo speakers and tells me which was to turn every so often. You can also find restaurants if you're not sure where you want to eat, you can use it to find stuff to do if you're not sure where you want to go---very cool. I think that people that get it and don't use it just never sat down and learned how to see what it can do.

I always figured it would not be worth the money, because you only don't know the way the first time, after that you can usually hack it. And most people drive to the same places all the time anyway.

But, every single time I find myself driving somewhere new and printing out directions from Google Maps and handing them to my girlfriend saying, "Here, read these to me on the way," I wish I had nav. to make it so much easier.

So does it track where you are on a map and actually tell you to make a turn before you get to it? I've never used it.

Yes, there is a map with an icon showing where you are on the road, and a voice (on some of them) comes and and says "Turn left at next stop light" or something to that effect. On mine, like I said, you can also choose from a category (such as food, entertainment, sports, etc) and it shows you a list of locations that have to do with your search subject within a predefined radius. I like it when traveling with the kids because I never have to guess when the next rest stop is coming up (it shows points of interest on the map). Only quirk is the dealer has to put a new DVD into a locked DVD drive every year to update the street maps.

Worth every penny .. as an architect / re developer .. its really helpful in scouting properties ... just put a magnet if u see a good vacant lot - and come back to it ... also was very useful when we were house hunting ... also for roadtrips - we use fastfood finder a lot - like when you are craving for taco bell and all u see is a McD's, the Nav will find one closeby - otherwise u wud normally just goto whats visible ... priceless imho ... bad thing is bmw nav sucks :(

also a major benefit is that in most downtown cities where the ramps / exits /freeways all become spaghetti - it will tell you which lane to be in ... so u never take a wrong exit by mistake... we almost always turn it on when in the KC downtown mess ... wish bmw wud change the annoying female voice (the male option sounds even dumber) ... and sometimes it starts giving distances in yards (instead of feet) but then agin i upgraded my NAV OS on my own - so cannot balme it on the dealer / bmw ... :(

one more thing ... you can have the NAV route you through fastest / shortest / scenic roads ... going from KC to STL we slected the scenic route - kept us away from the boring I-70 ... took us thru blue roadways / backways thru beautiful Missouri wineries ... something that online maps cannot do ... plus you get fodors guide inbuilt with reviews and stuff ... worth every penny ...

it's extremely useful in a car when you're visiting a new city. My uncle let me borrow his S500 in LA for a week when I visited...really useful to get to different locations and I never got lost going back to his house :D

I have navigation. It's very useful, I have used it numerous times, although it's usually in areas I am not familiar with. But I can find a fast food or a restaurant in less than 10 secs, or even ATMs and gas stations.

I absolutely LOVE mine in my mazda3. It's not only helped me find places i've never been to, but even local areas i know, its able to find new quicker ways for me to go.

Some other things i like, it has phone numbers for alot of places, so no more calling home for my dad to look up the # for a store or restaurant on google, saves me alot of time.
I also love how it calculates remaining time till you reach the destination (so when your late, you can call and say im 15 minutes away, with confidence).

One last thing i like is how you can look up not only restaurants by types of food, but also gas stations by specific company, banks, etc... i love it :D

WELL worth it.
