I've had a fender acoustic guitar since this summer, but have yet to be able to learn how to play songs on it (I'm not a slow learner because I played Tenor sax for 7 years)

Are there any sites out there that are great for beginners?

I've tried reading guitar tabs but I have no clue as to what I'm doing (well I know how to read them, they just don't sound anything like the song)

So if you could link to any great guitar sites, I'd really appreciate it.

Well, you might learn how to try to learn the notes, scales, chords, etc, but that's pretty difficult. If the tabs don't sound like the song you're playing it wrong, or the tab sucks. I'd try mxtabs.net - that's the site I frequent for my guitar tabs.

That site was really helpful to me when I first started about two years ago. I skipped the beginner lessons and jumped right into the intermediate section (first song I learned was Scarborough Fair)... it was a gamble, and it look me weeks to learn that song, but it paid off. I feel like by starting out with a real challenge I jump-started my technique. Next song I tackled was Blackbird (also in the intermediate section)... it also took a few weeks (practicing almost every day) to master... but man those songs are so rewarding once you can play them without stopping. Muscle memory kicks in and your fingers just know exactly where to go every time. After learning those two songs I was hooked. From there actually I moved onto learning tabs. With each song I learned it took less time to figure out. Eventually it got to the point where I could master a song in a day or two (with enough practice time).

Now I've moved on to using my ear. A lot of the songs I want to learn now haven't been tabbed (or the tabs are flat out wrong) so I just listen to the recording enough times and figure out the song for myself. At first that was daunting, but like anything else it gets easier with enough time and practice.

But in all honesty, the key is time commitment. I found that learning those first two "challenging" songs made me feel I was "good enough" to stick with it. Seeing how impressed friends and family were didn't hurt either 🙂.
