For those of you who had your stereo stolen...

Just curious.

Did anyone ever had their stereo stolen even when the faceplate is off? Most people probably keep their faceplates in the glove box and I am guessing thieves know this.

Sort of like how thieves break into cars even when they see a gps mount, but no gps (because its probably in the glove box).

A buddy of mine had his faceplate stolen from his car. Nothing else, just the faceplate. Man, was he pissed! He ended up replacing that stereo with a new one.

I know of people that had their cars broken into without faceplates on. They usually gutted the trunks though and left the deck behind most of the time. A faceplate though is easy to get really even though companies say they aren't.

I always took my faceplate off (might as well, right?) but never had any delusions about it really improving security much. Never had my car broken into, but maybe I got lucky. Current car has factory integrated radio/HVAC.

We have never had a car broken into, some one did steal the tail lights off of my moms mustang back in the day...

Someone jacked my alpine deck. Pried the window and undid the lock Triple A style. Then they yanked my whole deck out and ran off. =(
Nothing else was stolen though (laptop, ipod, gps). I wish I removed the face plate.

Had mine stolen. And yes my faceplate was in my center console. The worst part is that my door was unlocked. I found out from this that my keyless entry didn't lock my doors all the way. They would click, but not all the way. Of course a year later my sub got stolen at work when they broke in through my window (kind of makes you wish you had just left it unlocked, assholes. The window was worth more than the shitty base tube they stole). But at least they didn't get my new deck since the faceplate was with me this time.

Edit: This was in Modesto CA, and I am happy to say I no longer live in that dump.

This is precisely why I don't have an aftermarket stereo anymore. It's the main thing thieves look for when deciding which car to break into.

Another main thing is to not use window mounts for GPS units. Even if you hide the unit and the mount, they see the little ring mark on the window and know you have it.

They are easy to get, but they're expensive, almost as much as the deck usually. Probably isn't worth stealing for that reason, but b/c people do leave them in the car, a thief is probably going to mess up a lot of things looking for it.

I almost wonder if it's better to keep the door unlocked and the stereo unbolted

Had my HU stolen 4 times in the past 10 years. The faceplate was there each time. I'm lazy like that.

I also had a GPS mount, but I take my GPS in with me everytime, so it doesn't get stolen

Meh, I leave my faceplate in and my stereo is unsecured. Same with my amps. I'd rather it be easy to take then a thief fuck everything up trying to steal it. I'll be really pissed if somebody took my Zune, though. But, jokes on them 'cause it lasts about 5 seconds on the battery.
