Why do you use WinAmp? I use WinAmp, but am considering switching over to WMP, because it has pretty much the same stuff, but also better integration with the buttons on my laptop's chassis.

Why do you use WinAmp, and not WMP?

WinAmp is easy to use:
1. Click Add
2. Click Add Dir
3. Click the Music subdirectory(on laptop), or F drive (desktop)
4. Click OK
5. Click Play button

You can do that with WMP as well. Right click on the directory you want to play, and then click "Play with Media Player" or click "P" on the keyboard (if you don't have WinAmp installed) :D

Oh, I can think of one more advantage of using WMP: I can start it using the "Run" dialog. (just type in "wmplayer")

Of course there are many ways around that - add your winamp folder to your path, for instance.

mind walking me through the steps?

Sure...This is from Win2K put I'm pretty sure it's the same on XP:

Right-Click "My Computer" -> Properties

"Advanced" tab

Click "Environment Variables"

Find "Path" in the bottom "System Variables" window.

Highlight it and click "Edit"

At the end of the line, add a semicolon (;) and then type in the path to your winamp folder. E.g. (;C:\Program Files\Winamp3)

Click OK 3 times

You should now be able to launch winamp going start->run->winamp3

ive been using it for awhile, so im accustomed to it. it works fine, its easy enough that if my friends want to hear music they can use it, and best of all... it works perfectly fine with the media controls on my cordless logitech keyboard i got from hot deals years ago. just turn on my system, hit the 'media' button, and use the next track/previous track and volume controls on the keyboard.

I just like it. The skins, the interface, all of the above. Been using for soooo long - never a reason to change.

Plus it doesn't try to connect to the web when I fire it up. I rarely use WMP - VLC media player for video, Winamp for everything else.

i don't even install winamp anymore :) I like my itunes.. mainly because I found winamps media library to be slower in searching, and since I have an ipod mini (had an ipod before), it works nicely for me. But if you're only playing a list of mp3s, it does the job wonderfully (old school winamp), and most of the ppl I know use it for that.

WMP seems really clunky in handling. foobar is nice too.. but it's so overloaded w/ settings, that unless you're a computer geek, you're not going to bother with it. It's just not simple enough to use (gotta find the most up to date columns UI, volume bar... it's a lot of hunting over at hydrogenaudio).

Thanks.

And if you have WinAmp 5, you just need to type in winamp

I've been using winamp forever. I've used other players like sonique, WMP and foobar, but I still prefer winamp.

It does everything I need with very minimal and easy to use interface.

It takes up a small amount of memory, has lots of plug-ins, sits in the corner of my screen in shade mode. Works perfect. I don't have any use for any other crap.

you can put wmp on your task bar to keep it out of the way. works well for me, anyway.

i use wmp for music, and vlc for video. theres a lot of video that wmp or winamp cant play without downloading some crap. ive yet to find a video that vlc cant play (other than rm or mov) after the initial install.

It's probably just me, but WMP will forever feel like bloatware to me.

because we find foobar's columns_UI look much more efficient, informative and easy on eyes than the noobified winamp playlist :p

on a serious note, either is fine. i like foobar better but winamp is ok as long as you stick with older versions and install ciritical components like ASIO plugin and mp3 123 decoder or whatever it was called

i tried foobar for a while too, but it asploded every time i tried to load all of my mp3s. i did like the minimalistic interface, but if it can't handle my humble ~40gig mp3 collection then it's not for me.

Cause Ive used Winamp forever, it does everything I need, has all the functions I use. I use shoutcast alot to listen to internet radio, I honestly listen to that more then my MP3s now.
