I'm sold. Gonna get a Quark AA2 Tactical R5. Just cuz I can

Normal lithium batteries I hear?
Yeah sounds like a great choice. I bought a LD20 before I heard of the others but I think I'd like it or the Quake AA^2 the most.

nutnfancy likes lithium batteries for their performance, especially in cold weather, and because they are a lot lighter. For my LD20 around the house, I don't care about either and I don't have any rechargeables, so I just use cheap alkaline batteries. The performance and life has been great so far.

For general use, I'd probably say rechargeables like the Eneloops would be best. If you have the light in a survival kit or something where it needs to work in all temps, keep a fresh set of lithium for it.

18650s are popular and quite common. You know those laptop batteries that are dead? They're not! Rip them apart and meter the individual cells. Most likely you will find a cell with < 3V. Put that one aside. The ones showing 3+ V are good and can be used in flashlights taking these cells.

Do follow proper charging guidelines for unprotected cells, always! Always consult with the flashlight manufacturer on proper use of unprotected cells in their flashlights. If they say don't use them - don't! In an emergency where no other cell is available you certainly can use them so you have light, etc. Their self discharge rate is superbly low as well.

You would be surprised at what people say about them. Of course most people have a plastic energizer flashlight sitting in the drawer with a pair of nearly depleted alkaline D cells, cracked and crazed plastic lens, and yellow, flickering beam full of donut holes! :D

The flashlight I keep in my work truck emergency kit was sort of like that. I tried to turn it on and the on/off slider broke off. It had corroded from the inside of the battery compartment. So I unscrewed the top any various other metal fragments fell out. What is sad is that I stored it with the batteries separated by cardboard to help prevent this.

LOL well I believe you just did! :D

When all else fails (batt dies) there's plenty of bezel and head to crack the skull of a doubter. ;)

People can not deny the fact that there are lots of great LED flashlights out there, such as Luxeon, Surefire, Fenix, etc. But i don't often use those flashlights above for the reason that these lights are becoming too expensive. I found a 21 Led emergency flashlight from sourcingmap for $10.99.Very sturdy, very bright, very simple design. I love it. I’m trying to find more cheap portable flashlights to give as Mother's Day gifts.

Fenix E01. "Santa" brought one for my wife, 3 1/2 year old (at the time), and myself for christmas this year. Small enough to put on a keychain...bright enough to blind people at night!

I just got a new 200lumen E2DL the other day and THAT seems wicked bright. Can't imagine what that thing looks like in person....

I'm still holding out for the new Ra's thought. Should be out sometime in August.....

Goes head to head with 30W HIDs with ease. Unlike the HIDs in its price range the beam control (profile) is better and its color temperature is more desirable. A winner in its class for sure!
