I am one of those people that was born to smoke I think.

I have ALWAYS LOVED the smell of ciggies, even when I was very young.

When I quit last time I used nicorette gum.

I could be riding by bike down the road, pass a bar on the FAR side of the street, and the smell of smoke would make me SICK!

This was the only time in my life that ciggie smoke smelled BAD to me.

You can quit smoking, eat exactly the same, and have the same activity you had before, and still gain weight

It doesn't mean you will though.
I did too.

EDIT: And the gum seemed to make me less volatile as well!

here's what i did when i quit cold turkey (before any patch or gum existed):

go for long walks (up to a few miles). i started doing this before i tried to quit because i knew what to expect from prior (failed) quitting attempts. when you feel anger/anxiety/craving, take off on a walk - worked for me.

you can walk for a longer time than you can lift weights, walk repeatedly throughout the day (try that with weightlifting!), plus you can speed up or slow down as needed.

The only reason I'm not smoking now is my significant other. She deserves better than a smelly, sour tasting smoker. :)

He's right. No one wants to kiss an ashtray. :p

I always brushed my teeth after I smoked so that my husband would never have to feel like that was what he was doing. It didn't always help though.

I didn't smoke much, though. Maybe two packs a week. But I wasn't going to lug a toothbrush and toothpaste everywhere either :p

I didn't smoke when I was out of the house that much. If he and I went out together I wouldn't smoke. I never even smoked in our room.

I smoked about a pack a day.

I am so glad that I quit. :)

you had the money to buy smokes no? but you can't afford to see the doc? Can you put a price on your lungs?

Doctors visit: $50-$100+ dollars
Prescription for Zyban: $100+/month

Can you put a price on your lungs?
health Insurance should cover the doctors visit and part of the prescription.
Pack of smokes: $3-$4
smoking for 1 month: $90-120+
smoking for 1 year: $1080-$1440+

Seems to me the doc's visit and prescription is quite a bargain, aside from the health benefits.

When I first quit, I walked. I live right between 2 malls but I didn't want to be like those funny looking people who walk aroung in circles inside of those places. So I'd walk down M37 to the bigger of the two malls, circle it on the outside, and walk back taking side streets. A good hour at least. The last time I went that route a big, black dog (some kind of Terrior) scared the sh!t outta me. I heard some barking behind me and when I turned around he was already within 20 yards and closing fast. Probably looked pretty funny seeing a 40-year-old booking down the side of the street with a look of terror on his face, trying to outrun a dog...who was more than likely just playing. Never turned back around. All I remember is hearing some guy shouting "Heel, Blue! C'mere Blue!"
So now, I walk around campus...better sightseeing anyways. ;)

there are 40 million people without health insurance. I understand what you are getting at, but for people that can barely afford smokes and buy by-the-pack, a couple hundred bucks upfront and hundreds+ monthly after that is quite hard to finance.

Pack of smokes: $3-$4

Well, retail for brand name maybe. You can get generics or go mail order and get smokes for $1.50-$2/pack.

You're right, but somehow I get the feeling that someone posting on ATOT on a decent PC, talking about going to classes (college I presume) and working out doesn't have health insurance. As a matter of fact, if I recall correctly from my days at college, you were required to have health insurance in order to even attend.

I'm not arguing here or trying to be a dick, just trying to help. Furthermore if Doc is not an option...there are plenty of free programs that are available.

It doesn't mean you will though.

The odds are against you. Last I saw a study showed the overwhelming majority of quitters gained somewhere around 10 pounds in the first year.

My job kept me so busy that I did not have time to be snappy/moody. I guess just keep yourself busy with activities for a couple of days and you should be fine.
