If that works like they say it does, it would have saved me a bunch of headaches in my 20s.

I had 4 roommates. I just had a large dry erase calender and wrote what bills and when they were do on it. And then we would have a party and someone would lean against it and wipe it off!

win-win??

(total amount of bills) / (total number of tenants) = Amount due by everyone.

Person whose name is on accounts = responsible

In college when I had roommates, I handled all the bills. Everything was split evenly (except rent itself, we varied that by room size because it was drastically different), but I collected and paid everything. Made things easier.

Out of curiosity, how many of the people who responded to this thread even live on out of their parent's home? If you do, how many of you have roommates, and don't live alone?

I had roommates for 5 years in college. Between 1-3 at a time. I currently live alone.

Put all in a roommate's name, never your own. Don't tell them. Pay every so often only, just enough so you don't get constantly cut off, only once in a while. Plan vacations accordingly.

Why would you type "d-cide" when it has exactly as many characters as "decide"? And "x-tra"?
Seriously if you have pain in your d-word you might want to see an urologist. Sadly your urologist probably wouldn't divide the bill for you.

All of the bills and rent were paid from that account, which I had in my name because I had done it for a year before on my own. We didnt divide bills up each month or anything like that, I simply collected the same amount of money each month from each person to cover the bills and whatever was left at the end of the term of our lease and after all the bills were paid would be equally divided among us. This worked well then and worked well when I moved to have only a single other roommate, we just paid in the same amount each month and everything was equal that way.

I was also able to buy some cleaning supplies and other shared things through that account so that I never had to deal with the hassle of dividing bills and paying each other money to cover each others bills. I didnt trust either roommate to pay bills on time so I took the responsibility myself.

Thats how I handled it and it worked just fine.

That's a really smart idea.

All my GF pays is half the rent. I pay for everything else, even food. She pays when we eat out though.

When I had a roommate I paid everything and then got him to pay me at the end of the month. It was much easier to do it that way than to transfer $23.06 to me then $33.66 to him etc. I just took rent + internet + hydro + newsgroups, added it all together, divided by 2, rounded to the nearest $5, and got that from him every month.
