Interesting article. Covers even the subcritical assembly using uranium or uranium oxide.

A gun type design would be the simplest build. Obviously if your gonna test one it would only make sense to do it somewhere in the nevada desert where no population is put at risk.

Remember not to use a digital countdown timer, they will self-trigger then speed up dramatically with ominous music playing in the background.

Thats true, you never know what the gamma radiation could to to the electronics of a regular kitchen timer.

You can do it in New Jersey where nobody worth saving is put at risk. It might even qualify as a public service.

Just wondering what the news here is, nuke plans have been on the net since there was a net. Any grad level physics student should be able to do it if they could find the uranium.

Hey, doesn't Amazon sell it?

Wasn't there a kid who made or tried to make a mini reactor using smoke detector radioactive strips or something similar. When it was discovered his shed became a disaster site from the radiation.
Someone help me out, I think it was the late 80s or early 90s?

Manhattan project?
thought it was only equivalent of a few sticks of dynamite turned into 2megatons?

Neat. I wonder if some of this info can be used to build a nuclear reactor. With prices of hydro I'm seriously starting to consider my off grid solutions. Solar + wind, and when the batteries are too low, fire up the nuke reactor. When solar + wind are overproducing, re-enrich the rods with high voltage arc discharge. Wait, why is this not a thing?

"Hobby."

Isn't teh hard part, you know, obtaining the plutonium?

Plutonium is too dangerous. You can easily mess up and cause a prompt criticality event and end up killing yourself from extreme gamma radiation and neutron activation of some of your body parts.

You could build a ghetto reactor, some good ideas from the chicago pile.

make sure to insist on boron free graphite bars from your local provider.
