For those in support of Palestine

Over the past year or so there have been how many dozen sucide bombings conducted by the Palestinian Authority and it's militant wings against Israel. There have been Peace talks on and off, and most world nations pushing for peace (US, Canada, EU, etc, etc, etc). Israel withdrew it's forces the last time they advanced, and yet the bombings continued. From the media reports that I've seen, Israel has tried numerous times for a peace deal, but Arafat wasn't interested. Now Israel has 'invaded', and I use that term very loosly, the launching grounds for the sucide bombers, and Arafat is screaming bloody murder, but last week he wasn't interested in a peace deal......

So my question is what could Israel possibly do to stop the bombings besides this? From the media reports, Arafat and the Arab league don't look like they'll be happy until Israel is destroyed and it's citizens murdered.

I do not understand the Arab's position on this at all. But I full understand Israel's response. I sure would do anything I possibly could to stop daily bombings against my citizens. I'm not looking for a flame fest here, please take a constructive stance with this.

Arafat is an 8 year old throwing rocks at Israel. Israel tries to ignore them, but after a while he had to throw them back to make Arafat stop. Once Arafat got hit in the face, he started crying to mommy, and now Israel's parents (EU) are yelling at him to stop being so mean. That's basically what it boils down to.

<< If someone invaded your land, wouldn't you be mad? >>

and if look at the death toll over the past year you'll find many more Palestinians were killed than Israelis. I think suicide bombers are sick but Israel is no different.

<< If someone invaded your land, wouldn't you be mad? >>

I'd be mad...but if in the past, some of my neighbors went over to their land and blew people up, I'd sorta understand 😉

The media depicts the situation over there in a very basic way. There are many things that are not being talked about. What should happen to the Israeli settlements that have been built inside of palistinian territory? Arabs want a right to return to their homes inside of Israel (that are now occupied by israelies), should they be allowed to return?

There are many Israelies that didn't want peace during the times where a deal has seemed imminent. Both sides say that they are working twoards peace but they each insist on something that is not acceptable to the other side. They will have to work all of those issues out. Israel has been giving more than the palestinians have been to make peace. It is not that Arafat is "not intrested in peace" but that he hasn't seen a deal that gives him everything that he wants. Arafat would be assinated if he is seen to be weak against Israel.

One very important thing is that Arafat has many times called upon the UN and NATO to send peacekeeping troops. Israel has refused. I think peacekeepers are needed to stop the suicide bombings. Israel's army is strong enough to kill lots of people and to shut down the palistinian territories but that just angers the people even more and causes more bombings. IF there was a peacekeeping force, Israel could end their occupation of Palistine (which is what is causing the bombings) without having to let the territories become a lawless land.

sorry that this is so poorly written but I have a hard time discussing important issues over the internet.

Don't you hafta differentiate between targetting innocent people, and targetting military and terrorist targets though? 😕

I always thought you did 😱

Anyhow...I digress. The question posed was "What can be done to stop the suicide bombings?"

I am given to understand that most of what we understand about the situation was formed from the Israeli point of view, and that the truth needs to include a Palestinian perspective. That should render a more realistic understanding that both sides are equally guilty and equally insane. I love listening to the points of view presented in the media, some of which occassionally includes interviews with Palestinians. No matter which is speaking, invariably, it seems to me, almost the first thing out of eather sides mouth is how it's all the other side's fault. You're not like that are you?

<< If someone invaded your land, wouldn't you be mad? >>

Good thing that's not happening to the Palestinians, or they might do something stupid!

I don't think there's anything Israel can do to stop the bombings... the existance of Israel is offensive to these Islamic extremists - it's in the Palestinian National Charter (which Arafat and the PLO pledged to change 8 years ago but haven't yet). Plus, in mid-2001 something like 70% of Palestinians supported suicide bombings. You can't force peace on a people that don't want it. So, you have to make the Palestinians want it - ie mind control! Get Madison Avenue on this problem immediately.

both sides are guilty of killing innocents, as if the amount really matters. a solution at this point is very hard, and for people to sit here and pose solutions who are completely ignorant to the situation should just keep their mouth shut.

i can't believe how many silly kids AND adults here (russ for one, i was surprised) speak their uninformed mouths off. obviously no one here has any true sense of the situation because you're neither israeli nor palistinian, and living in either area. both sides are given propaganda from their leaders, and we, the US, mostly sees what's happening to israel on the news (israeli soldier who dies is a hero but palistinian who dies doesn't get mentioned, for example)..

anyway, it's just a really sad situation and there's nothing we can do but hope for it to end peacefully, as soon as possible...

really sick of seeing the same thing posted over and over.. glad to see not EVERYone is ignorant though.. (understanding neither party is innocent)

I'm afraid that it does matter, and it matters alot.

None of us are ignorant to the situation at all, I think that's pretty clear given that we are discussing what could be done to stop the crisis.

What does that have anything to do with understanding the situation? Well I guess your not Canadian, so you couldn't possibly understand basketball or hockey. Kind of silly argument isn't it.

<< [An] Israeli soldier who dies is a hero but palistinian who dies doesn't get mentioned, for example >>

That probably has alot to do with the figures quoted above, 70% of palestinians support sucide bombings, where as in our culture they are not endorsed one bit.

Unrelated: Am I correct in that both sides agreed to the borders setout by the UN after the last war?

<< I'm afraid that it does matter, and it matters alot. >>

You misunderstood me. I mean when someone kills 5, the other kills 10, the missle kills 5, whatever.

<< None of us are ignorant to the situation at all, I think that's pretty clear given that we are discussing what could be done to stop the crisis. >>

Sure you [they] are. Have you seen how many people suggested we wipe out all the palistinians without a second thought? Or those who think it's such a simple task to solve. "Just kill arafat" "just pull out" etc.

<< What does that have anything to do with understanding the situation? Well I guess your not Canadian, so you couldn't possibly understand basketball or hockey. Kind of silly argument isn't it. >>

It has a lot to do with it, and you gave a really bad analogy. If someone's son or daughter or whatever were killed because of a suicide bomber, or tank/assault fire, most people don't know the feeling.. "why.." you're not there to experience what's going on. Why do you think everyone is always asking why this and why that.. and you get all these different answers.

<< That probably has alot to do with the figures quoted above, 70% of palestinians support sucide bombings, where as in our culture they are not endorsed one bit. >>

Regardless. See my above comment.. I'm not saying to claim some suicide bomber a hero, but to claim the the same thing vice versa is just just as bad, but it's accepted and it makes it look like israelis are innocent when they're not.

sigh.. i'm lebanese and i have many jewish and israeli friends and its so tragic for both of us 🙁

I'm interested to hear what you think should be done. Everyone keeps saying "well just pull out," but I think that the bombings are likely to just continue on as they have been.

An international peace force may work, but they likely won't be any more effective at stopping the bombers as the Israelies are, and they we will have international forces firing on palestinians when we're trying to stop the bombers. It's a lose-lose situation I think. The question is which is the lesser of two evils? What are you thoughts?

<< The question is which is the lesser of two evils? >>

That really is the question everyone should be asking themselves, and I think the answer is pretty obvious.

Lands need to go back to the Palestinians. Then Palestinians need to declare their nation state. Then you have two, not one, distinct nations with distinct boundries. From that point on it becomes a *little* easier to assign or take responsibility for actions that have taken place, or which should take place.
It also makes accountability easier.

Honestly, I don't know. But you yourself understand what I mean.. I think they may continue too, for example..

If it was so easy to solve this would of ended long ago. 🙂 I just can't stand the people who think the solution is so simple when it's not.. My comments are not directed to the people who are seriously discussing the matter.. it's just the ignorant (more specifically these fans of genocide) ones I'm getting tired of..

When my two children fight over the same toy i take it away so that neither can have it. Simple huh.

The truth is that this is another example of the type of conflicts we will see from this day on. This is a unilateral war. Most adult Americans are from the cold war era. Once upon a time you could build a huge army and i'll do the same and we can knock heads until one of us runs out of toys. Not any more. In this case we have a well armed military vs a poorly armed para military. Of course the Palestinians are going to use suicide bombers, it is all they have short of a lot of rocks to throw. People keep asking why and while using a western mind set get frustrated when the answer doesn't fit. So where is the break point when this is over religious beliefs, holy land, and revenge for family.

Both parties know what the other wants for peace. Neither wants to give an inch. If this is the case let them fight it out. Arafat can get mad all he wants about the US not getting involved and Sheron can spout all he wants about this being just like 9/11. In the end (if there is an end) the guy with the most and biggest toys will write history. Sorry that innocent people are dying but my money is on the pissed off Jews.
