Since a lot of people are seeming to have trouble getting the Radeon to work with Xfree86, I decided to write a program to modify an XF86Config file to use the Radeon (since xf86config doesn't list it). The program is available here for those who want it.

Good luck to you guys!

This is the coolest thing that has happened to me all day. Thanks a million. I got the darn thing working (Radeon with XFree86 4.02) but now I have problems getting a window manager to run when I start X. It just comes up all grey with a "x" cursor, and sometimes 2 or 3 xterms running.

If I run xdm, It goes into KDE and looks great, but now I can't get out of xdm. What the hell is wrong with me? I'm way out of my league. But it's lots of fun.

So, with your program, I may be able to reinstate my "old" XF86Config file and get it working with the radeon driver. But I wonder if I'm too far out on a limb to get it back to normal. Find out tonight after work (Alaska timezone, so late).

If you want to have kde start when you type startx then just edit the file ~/.xinitrc and add the line startkde to the end. When you type startx kde should start instead of twm (those xterm windows). It's also normal for XDM not to terminate. It won't go away unless you switch to another window and kill it. (BTW, if you're gonna use a login manager KDM is a lot better in my opinion).

And if you copy over the original XF86Config file, yes, the program (should) modify it to use the radeon driver.
