For those cheering the hanging of Saddam Hussien

I find it odd that many of us, (myself included to a small degree) cheered the hanging of Saddam by religous lunatics... The eerie part of his hanging was the religous cheering of death, the fanatical chants supporting radical muslim extremist clerics that are basking in the glory of another dead secular leader..

These executioners reminded me a lot of the same nutjobs that executed Perle, the same nutjobs that parade on internet after cutting off the heads of people, the same scumbags that blow up cities full of innocent civilians.

Better to stick with the devil you know than to deal with the devil you don't is the perfect cliched analogy when looking at this situation. Saddam knew how to rule these maniacs, now the religous maniacs are running the show. God help the rest of the middle east and Iraq.

Curious: By what evidence do you label his hangmen "religious lunatics"?

I only watched his execution video briefly a few days ago, but it didn't strike me to be the work of lunatics. I rather thought they were semi-subtly mocking him by sort of saying, "God ain't gonna help you where you're going, b!tch."

And God save the Queen! Seriously though, the U.S. screwed this one up big time. We essentially handed Saddam over to the Mr. Maliki who rushed the execution past constitutional and legal processes. He in turn handed Saddam over to the Shiites who turned the whole thing into a stupid spectacle by chanting "Moktada al-Sadr!" over and over and taunting the condemned (among other things). Seriously, does everything we touch over there turn to sh!t?

Which pretty much confirms what I said, doesn't it? They weren't religious fanatics, just relishing the fact that they got to watch him finally get what he deserved.

The key part that you missed:

"The witnesses also repeatedly call out the name of the militant Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, leader of the Mahdi Army, before cheering as Saddam's body crashes through the trapdoor of the gallows."

They're not chanting for al-Sadr because their cleric has won against a secular leader, dude. They're chanting al-Sadr's name because he and his organization ultimately prevailed over a tyrant. This is great evidence of blood calling for more blood, but hardly that of religion vs. secularism (is that a word?).

Saddam was not a nice man, and did as human being alot of things which deserve death,BUT in this part of the world,i definitely agree with above statement,if bush knew ahead of time ,to what he was getting into, and the consequences aftermath,he would have changed the course for sure, and concentrate on Afghanistan only,to get me back bin laden's head on a pole.you would never know how many head of states in the west, who were dealing with him, wanted this "witness" to disappear forever, just like in the mob fictions movies.he knew how to keep the head cutters animals at bay,as the average USA soldiers can`t do it and never will,as they are too much of a human being,(educated, dissent, civilized) sound crazy but true.

Adding to that there is no God -- proof?? Irrefutable proof that is.....this ought to be good...pulls up a chair and a glass of lemonade..

Isn't the Sadr clan murdering innocent humans everyday with their car bombs and such.. torturing and murdering people from the other religious party... even al-sadr is stronger than al-malaki.. Sadr got that guy elected.. sort of like the yakuza but adding extra fanatacism and violence and bombs

The only way Saddam was removed from power is by us bombing the hell out of Iraq and creating massive chaos..

We removed Saddam. al_Sadr and his ilk (Sunni & Shite) then went into a power struggle to fill the vaccum.

The locals only see that Saddam/Sunni went down and al_Sadr/Shite rose.

Well I cant prove there is no God, just as a believer cannot prove there is one.

I will say the based on the evidence I speculate there is no God.

There are too many scientific debunking of the bible and other religious documentation.
In addition to that strong evidence in fossil record that evolution is real.

I think its more logical that religion always has been an instrument of control rather than based on Historical fact.

I have to say, I agree with Daniel49 up to this point at least. Often times atheists hate to admit that atheism is a religion as much as any other, albiet a loosly organized and radicaly different religion. To take the scientific facts of evolution, physics, astronomy, biology etc. as 'proof' that there is no God takes the same leap of faith as taking ones moral consience as evidence that there is a God takes. Often times the bible is taken out of context, at least out of the context i read it in, by pointing out historical innacuracies, other explanations for miracles etc and saying that they've 'debunked' the bible somehow. Well my response is that i don't think Horton the elephant ever really heard a who; but thats besides the point of the story (i love Dr. Seus). Anyways just how i feel about all this.
