for those allergic to cats

most cats i can tolerate, my friend got 2 cats and they much be genetic mutants as i can only stand about 2 hours in the house with them. breathing gets tougher and i cough alot.

im thinking of maybe wearing an allergy mask, or popping a benadryl before. what have you done if anything and did it work well?

my dad has a prescription from his doctor. i heard that vacuuming helps... so i try to always vacuum before anyone who's allergic comes over.

Cats are like one of the worst allergy pets. I developed allergies to them when I was growing up around grade 6/7. Now if I sleep over at a persons house that has a cat, I will wake up in the morning with my throat half closed, wheezing, asthma like symptoms. Nothing you can really do as the cat hairs are air born and fine. Vacume the house, don't go near couches, open windows and ventilate the house. Medication ftl, Id rather not go to a persons house with a cat then take meds and own myself.

Allergy medicine is about all you can do. Obviously don't touch the cats, and do not rub your eyes.

i am also plagued with this problem, have been my entire life. I just do that ^^^ and try to stay away.

Myself, I've never tried masks. In the past I've had a lot of good luck with Claritin, though I think that recently I must have gotten used to it, or something, because it hasn't been working too much. If I know that someone I'm visiting has a cat, I ask that they put the cat away before I come and vacuum. If I need to sleep there, I make sure that the room I'll be sleeping in isn't frequented by the cat. While I'm there, I try to avoid couches and such that have a lot of cat fur on them, don't sit on the floor, and make sure to change and wash my clothes as soon as I get back home. The thing that has helped the most in the past though is the medication. Good luck!

When I got my cat I was super allergic. As soon as we got her in the car my eyes started to water and I was sneezing uncontrollably. It was really bad, I took allergy medicine and it helped. But over the course of a few months my allergys went away. Probably took about 5-6 months but after that I was no longer allergic.

Prescription for Flonase and a generic claritin knock-off from Target work well for me. I also use a HEPA filter for my apartment. It's recommended to use a HEPA vacuum cleaner and air-purifier, but I never use them. I have really bad allergies, but with the Flonase and Claritin it's like I don't have them at all.

ditto...i am like a friggin cat alarm, i can tell if there is a cat in the house the moment i step in, usually i just do whatever i have to do and leave, i can stand about 20-30 min before i start developing symptoms after that i excuse myself and leave...kinda bummer when it's a nice party.

symptoms include
stuffy nose to the point of not breathing
sneezing
wheezing
and basically anything ending in 'ezing

Double shot of Claritin. When I had a cat I wasnt really allergic, but if I got to someones house with a cat it hits pretty bad. So I double dose about an hour before I go around any cats.
