For emergencies, etc.???

I only keep about $1500 in mine, but would like to add more if my idiotic self would quit buying gadgets and things I don't need.

I'm 18, about to go off to college. I currently have >5000 in savings, but that is for whatever I want to use it for (but I prefer not to spend too much money from it, so I guess you can categorize it as emergency funds).

You're young and single... you should be BUILDING savings, not maintaining a constant level.

If I didn't spend a lot on photography, I'd probably have a hell of a lot more. Luckily financial aid covers all of my tuition, but I pay for everything else and don't live at home.

With that said, right now I have about $5000 in ING, no debt, and more than enough credit to face any rainy day I'll be facing before I finish my undergraduate degree.

If I needed more, I could sell some of my stuff, like my camera gear, HDTV, etc.

I'd want about a thousand I could get my hands on the next day. The rest of my savings I'm sure I could liquidate within a couple weeks at most.

28 single and living check to check

Any savings I had before/during college was gone after college and I had a 401K until a few months ago when unemployment forced me to cash it in

Maybe he's differentiating between liquid savings (savings, MM, and checking) and investments...

And, you're trying to buy it outright or what? Whatever, I hope you're still able to have some good times and good food.
