For the Vodka drinkers: Filter your cheap stuff with Brita filter....

These guys experimented with a Brita water filter and found that crappy filtered Voldka came out tasting like the good stuff. Turns out, that could be alot of what seperates the good stuff from the junk.

Gonna try it on some Takkaa that I have when I get home tonight.

Our theory is that a simple brita water filter can be used to make bad vodka, into good. In our case this meant turning a Vladimir?, into a Ketel One?. At $11.09 for 1.75 liter (Ketel is 11.99 for the 350 ml), Vladimir is a steal. It is, however, painful to drink, has a repugnant aftertaste, posesses a bouquet reminiscent of rubbing alcohol. Our working theory was that these terrible qualities were caused by a lack of proper filtration, and that running our Vlad through a charcoal filter would remove some of the impurities causing these odors and flavors.

I wonder if it dilutes the alcohol content, because that would make it a practically worthless discovery

Probably not. You've no idea what ramifications this has for us simple college folk. Hottest deal I've seen on theses forums. Ever.

Naa if you read the comments from others that have done the experiment in the comments section of that blog, one of the guys had a tester that gathered the alcohol content before and after and they were the same.
There was some discussion about that since charcoal (which makes up a brita filter) is used by medics and hospitals when you drink too much alcohol, but it has been shown (at least by that guy) that it does not filter out or absorb the alcohol.
If you have time and read through the comments posts, they are really informative and funny.

Good call, and I found the vast majority of the recipes in a page on their site (6,000). Check my post there for the link so you don't have to wait for the CD to be shipped.

It isn't super cheap, but a lot cheaper than the "premium" stuff, but Monopolowa vodka is just as good as Grey goose, Absolut, Stoli, Skyy, and others.

We use it for out Kamikazees before a night on the town to save money, and we've been hangover free for a couple years now.

Find a bar that uses it as their well vodka and you're good to go.

Talk about nasty stuff... a friend had some Taakka back in college. We used to joke around about Taakka being Russian for bad.

You would think that if the difference between cheap Vodka and good Vodka was a brita water filter, the guys making the cheap Vodka would just run it through a brita filter and sell it for more...

Definitely sounds like a neat idea. They say that one of the most important ingredients in Vodka is the water. That's why you have brands such as "Iceburg" Vodka. They go way up north and use rifles to shatter iceburgs and harvest ice into boats.... It's crazy if you ask me...but that's their process. If you filter the vodka after it's been made, you'll not only filter out some of the impurities, but you'll filter out some of the flavor from the mash as well..... But maybe that's what the more crude vodkas need to make them smoother. The real question is about alcohol content. I don't think you'd be filtering out much of the alcohol because the filter would only be able to react to the first couple of ounces before it is primed with the solution and would only catch other impurities from there on. I'll get one of these in the next week and try it out. :)

A coworker of mine suggested that we use the Brita Dispenser rather than the pitcher because it'd be easier to refill the bottle....plus it would hold the full handle. It uses the same filters as the pitchers.

I agree, but if you look at this like overclocking a processor, you could buy the higher end product, but you will not have the feeling of bucking the system and making yourself a deal.
Overclocked Takakaa for me tonight. :)

Good idea about the dispenser!

Hmm, someone's panties seem to be in a bunch after his bright idea was challenged... Go make yourself a Stoli Razz & Sprite, I'm sure you'll feel better ;)
