What would you do?

Looking at either GTX 470 or HD 5870 probably. Will overclock. Main game will be FFXIV, wanting it as quality as possible at 1920x1200.

I know of the noise / power / heat etc. of the GTX 470, which is why I'm considering Gigabyte's new SOC card.

Here are my options:

1. Get this GTX 470: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-338-_-Product Which is $395 CAD. Reason being - quieter, uses less power, specially selected GPUs so high chance of an 800+ overclock.

2. Get a standard GTX 470, such as EVGA for about $340 CAD, but reference design / cooler.

3. Go with the HD 5870, however won't be one of the "high end" 5870s since they run closer to $500. It'd be one of these:

Any of the $400-410ish or less.

HD 5870 is faster than stock GTX 470 for sure, but the pre-OC of the Gigabyte one has it winning in game benchmarks and further headroom though.

No real brand preference, but I kind of leaning towards the Gigabyte GTX 470. Not sure on the overclockability of the 5870.

Providing I can still get a hold of the MSI golden edition GTX 465's that are pre-unlocked I'll probably go with that since it'll be about $320-$330, but this is "Plan B" if they are all sold out when I purchase later this week.

I do have a lot of airflow in my case for what it's worth.

At this point the 5870 and the 470 trade blows when it comes to performance. Assuming your PSU is good and you have good case airflow, the 470 is the much better buy, grab an EVGA ref. design and save yourself $150.

Go with the market leader...Cypress 5800 series has demolished Fermi 470 and 480 in the market place.

How much does a 5850 cost there? Of all the new gen cards(I've owned most of them at one point) the 5850 had to be the best one. Low power consumption, quiet as a mouse, small, still kicked ass in games. I wouldn't worry about physx because unless you have a gtx 480 sli you wont be doing much with physx.

Final Fantasy 14 runs a lot better on the 5K series compared to Fermi.
Both ingame and in benchmark.

Get a 5850 and OC it to 950/1200, similar to an OC 5870.

But, wait a bit, late october the 6K series is out, and its going to make every GPU currently obsolete.

However, surely you are not spending $400 just to play 1 game? The 470 can overclock to 480 speeds, which 5870 can't match. Also in almost all the latest games, the 470 overclocked will beat the 5870 overclocked (Just Cause 2, Metro 2033, STALKER: CoP, Lost Planet, Starcraft 2, etc.)

I still think spending $400 so close to HD6000 launch is not wise. A better value from the 2 choices you mentioned is a 5850, which is barely any slower and still gives 60fps in FF14 for just $260-280.

If heat and noise are problems for you then go for the 5870.

If heat and noise dont bother you then get the 470.

They seem to be about even in the benchmarks.

AMD is the market leader for DirectX 11 cards right now, but Nvidia also presents some compelling products at the high end as well. If I were in the market right now I would be very torn between a 5850 from AMD for $239 after rebate, and a 460 for $220.

Why buy such an expensive 470? At only $5 to $10 more for a 5870 I wouldn't even consider a 470. I don't see how the MSI is worth a $100 price premium over some of the other 470s available.

470 is faster than the 5870 in Battleforge, STALKER: CoP, Metro 2033, Lost Planet 2 and is the same speed in Dirt 2. The only DX11 game where 5870 is better is BF:BC2. Plus you get 4 free A rated games - how is that not a good deal?

Frankly I wouldn't spend $400 on either the 470, nor the 5870. I'd get the 460 or the 5850 instead as in Canada they are cheaper than the 470 with an aftermarket cooler.

The reason I linked the MSI card is because it has 4 free games + aftermarket cooler and the OP was considering the Gigabyte card of the 470.

While that Gigabyte card seems to be calling to you and is an excellent choice, the MSI card with the 4 games look better. Although...

What about a pair of 460's?

wait a month or so if you can. amd is planning aggressive price drops soon, and nvidia will most likely follow. happy days are here again!

I agree, at this point in time, just wait for that next surge in pricing changes, unless of course, you get a good deal somewhere.

Hold on to your precious money until AMD releases their 6000HD line. Hopefull the prices will fall in your favor :thumbsup:
