Puretalk's web site seems to hint that you can just buy minutes and not sign up for the Flex plan, but trying to get a coherent response from their email support people has been pretty tough so far.

Given this table they sent me, that would make them a very good deal if possible. Spent $100 up front for 1885 minutes.

$10 - 101
$20 - 275
$30 - 450
$40 - 655
$50 - 860
$60 - 1065
$70 - 1270
$80 - 1475
$90 - 1680
$100 - 1885

Waiting for the next reply from them now.

guy have to bring back an older post but I need a phone.
I use my at&t phone lg 1400 flip about 20-30 minutes a month and its costing me $45.

I need something cheap and after reading here about people that get by at about $18 a month I need help.

What do I get?
I don't mind paying a bill but the thing is I don't want to find out in the middle of the night I ran out of minutes and the phone doesn't work or oh those were old minutes and you need some new minutes.

I know that T-mobile had coverage in Arkansas and I looked at them, $15 a month and .15 cents a minute or $25 for 130 minutes. Can I get the 130 minutes and take 6 months to use them up?

can my at&t phone work and can I port the number?

Once you spend $100, then any refill renews you for a whole year. Otherwise minutes expire on varying schedules:

Your AT&T phone won't work unless you get AT&T to unlock it for you.

You can port your number in to T-mo.

I called t-mobile and they said that the gold service $100 was good for a year and 1000 minutes. More than I will use.
They could not say that at the end of a year I could refill it the same way.
The person also said there was a contract?
I asked what are you talking about, oh no that's for the regular service.
they said when you receive the phone and call the number for activation and pay for the plan they would be able to answer all my questions.
I told her that I buy a phone and then you answer my questions was not a good thing.

All those questions are answered on the T-mobile website via the link I gave. And as I said above, AFTER you've spent $100 you can refill even with a $10 card and renew ALL your minutes for an additional year. Generally you buy the phone at WalMart, Target, etc for $20-40-ish and that comes with a few starter minutes, then you refill with a $100 card and put an appointment on your calendar a year later to renew. While they'll preserve your gold status for some time after expiration, the minutes will be gone on the 366th day if you don't refill.

thank you rsolomon.
I am in for one.
I will call and get the gold card for $100.
That should cover me for a year. Lots cheaper then the at&t phone I have now.

If you shop around the $100 refill to get gold status sells at a discount, $87 to $94 is a common range (along with full price, and offers vary all the time).

As long as your minutes per month average below around 100, nothing beats Tmobile togo prepaid, and the service is generally quite good.

One of my speedddial numbers is called Minutes (just what I call it, could really be customer service or something), its a free call and I get a free reply back with remaining minutes and expiration date.

If you refill with less than $100 you will get fewer minutes per $$$.

T-Mobile uses GSM. You can use any GSM compatible phone you want as long as it is unlocked. The only catch is that T-Mobile phone come with T-Zones which lets you easily check your balance and expiration date, you wouldn't have that on BYOD device.

I have used TMO2GO for 3 years, and I still have it because now that I have gold status it only takes $10 a year to keep that number, however I am now trying to switch to Page Plus. It was more of a pain to get it working with Moto Droid, and it is more of a pain to keep track of you expiration dates because you have to replenish 3 times a year instead of just one and you have to be careful otherwise you're going to forfeit your balance, but I get vastly better phone, I get twice as many minutes for the same amount of money, and I get better reception out there, I was camping couple of weeks ago, nobody with GSM had any signal, but Verizon phones including my Page Plus droid were fine.

Yep. T-Mobile's PAYGO currently charges $.10 to send and $.05 to receive.

Additional Quick tidbit of info: Puretalk uses the AT&T network.

They charge you more than that. It's more like 25c/text on average. Pay attention to your balance-- #999#. The cent's digit does not only sit on 2 numbers (5/0, 1/6, 2/7, 3/8, 4/9). It changes between those. And if you send 10 texts your account is suddenly $5 less than it was before.

That's why they won't show you a log of your texts and calls-- because the numbers don't add up.

As long as the phone you use is configurable, that's a non-issue - I've had several Windows Mobile phones, iPhones, etc all happily using the free T-zones. Pretty cool extras beyond just balance info!

Has anyone here actually signed up with the puretalk? I'm considering it, mainly because t-mobile isn't offered in my location, or anywhere remotely close.

Just wondering how smoothly it all went before I pull the trigger.

Just got a Razr and $10 service for my duaghter. The phone was used but had new screen implants and looks like a new battery, and the exterior has no scratches. Only deal is the phone still has Cingular firmware on it, but works fine non the less. No complaints with the service, I have 5 bars here at my house.

I plan on putting myself and my son on the service too, just wanted to see how the initial findings were.

Oh yeah, it was almost 2 weeks before I got the phone... =[
